The programme combines training, practical experience and employment support to help residents explore roles in the sector, while connecting local employers with prospective workers through a series of events, including a recruitment fair scheduled for July.

The Widening Access Demonstrator (WAD) programme has been introduced to support people who are interested in working in adult social care by providing structured opportunities to develop their skills and understanding of the sector. According to East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Bridlington has been selected as the focus area for the programme, with local events, training sessions and a dedicated recruitment fair planned as part of the initiative.

The scheme has been developed jointly by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board. Its aim is to improve access to careers in adult social care while helping local residents move towards employment through a combination of learning, workplace experience and practical guidance.

Programme Combines Learning, Workplace Experience and Job Application Support

At the centre of the initiative is the SEA approach, which stands for Sessions, Experience and Application. According to East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the framework is designed to introduce participants to adult social care while supporting them throughout the recruitment process.

The sessions element provides interactive learning opportunities covering the values of adult social care, the range of available job roles and the essential skills needed to work in the sector. The programme is intended to help participants build confidence and gain a clearer understanding of the profession before applying for positions.

The experience stage allows participants to shadow existing staff members and take part in placements within adult social care services. It also includes bite-sized learning opportunities intended to give individuals practical insight into both the work itself and the communities they would support.

The application stage focuses on helping participants prepare for employment. This includes assistance with CV writing, completing job applications and interview preparation. According to the council, these pathways are aligned with the Choose Care campaign and will connect participants with current vacancies across the adult social care sector.

Recruitment Fair Forms Part of Wider Workforce Initiative

A recruitment fair will be held on Wednesday 8 July from 10am until 12pm at the Crown Community Building on Quay Road in Bridlington. The event is intended to bring together employers and residents interested in pursuing careers in adult social care.

Councillor Jonathan Owen, cabinet member for adults, health and care at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said the programme would help people of all ages discover the range of careers available within the sector. He said that working with partner organisations was creating clear pathways into employment through training, experience and tailored support.

Owen also said the programme was intended to support people leaving education, returning to work, changing careers or seeking progression within adult social care.

According to the NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, the partnership is also intended to strengthen the local workforce. Tina Jenkinson, Head of the Breakthrough Programme for Work, Health and Skills at the ICB, said the organisation was pleased to work alongside the council to deliver the programme in Bridlington, adding that it would help develop a skilled local workforce while supporting residents to access meaningful employment opportunities.
