Full List of Branches Affected

NatWest is closing several of its bank branches across the UK this week as part of an ongoing move away from high street banking and towards digital services. The closures form part of a wider restructuring plan that will see dozens of branches shut over the coming year.

NatWest closures planned in London, Essex and Yorkshire

Between Monday and Thursday, multiple NatWest branches in London, West Yorkshire and Essex are set to close permanently. The move is part of a previously announced plan to shut 30 branches nationwide in 2026, alongside additional closures later in the year.

One of the branches affected is located on Grays High Street, which is closing due to declining customer visits in person. Another branch in Spitalfields, London, will also shut this week, followed by closures in Halifax, West Yorkshire, and Fulham Broadway in London.

Wider Reduction in High Street Banking

NatWest’s latest closures are part of a broader trend affecting UK banking. According to consumer group Which?, more than 250 bank branches across different providers have closed nationwide, including NatWest, Lloyds, Halifax and Santander.

Since 2015, NatWest Group alone has closed more than 1,500 branches, making it one of the most active banks in reducing its physical presence on the high street. After this week’s closures and those planned later this year, the group will operate 336 branches across the UK, including NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank locations.

Shift Towards Digital Banking

The bank says the closures reflect changing customer habits, with around 95% of customers now using digital banking services in some form. As a result, fewer people are visiting branches for everyday banking needs.

However, NatWest has acknowledged that some customers still rely on in-person services for managing their finances, particularly vulnerable and older customers. To support this shift, the group has committed to investing £50 million into its remaining branch network, focusing on modernisation, refurbishment and improved accessibility.

Future Plans and Customer Support

NatWest has confirmed there will be no further closure announcements until at least 2029, providing some longer-term certainty for remaining branches. The bank says it aims to balance digital services with continued access to face-to-face banking where needed.

Solange Chamberlain, chief executive of retail banking at NatWest Group, said the organisation is working to offer customers a mix of banking options, including digital services, telephone support, ATMs and community banking hubs, reports The Sun.

Solange Chamberlain, chief executive of retail banking at NatWest Group. ©NatWest

What Customers Should Know

Customers affected by this week’s closures are being directed to nearby branches and digital services for continued banking access.
