The changes will result in substitute bank holidays being observed at the end of 2026 and 2027, with additional weekdays designated as public holidays when the traditional dates fall on a Saturday or Sunday.

The UK government has confirmed a series of adjustments to the bank holiday calendar for 2026 and 2027, affecting Christmas Day and Boxing Day in particular. The changes stem from longstanding rules that provide substitute weekdays when a bank holiday falls during a weekend.

For households and workers planning future leave, the revised dates will alter the timing of the Christmas and New Year holiday periods. The arrangements apply alongside the existing schedule of bank holidays across England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Substitute Days Will Replace Weekend Christmas Bank Holidays

According to the UK government’s published bank holiday schedule, Boxing Day in 2026 falls on Saturday 26 December and will not be observed as a bank holiday on that date. Instead, a substitute bank holiday will be held on Monday 28 December.

Christmas Day in 2026 falls on Friday 25 December and remains a bank holiday as normal. The result is that the Christmas holiday period will include both Friday 25 December and Monday 28 December as official bank holidays in England and Wales.

The government notes that when a bank holiday falls on a weekend, a substitute weekday usually becomes the official bank holiday, normally on the following Monday.

The same principle applies more extensively in 2027. Christmas Day falls on Saturday 25 December and Boxing Day on Sunday 26 December. According to the government schedule, both holidays will be observed through substitute days, with Monday 27 December designated as the substitute bank holiday for Christmas Day and Tuesday 28 December designated as the substitute bank holiday for Boxing Day.

The arrangements mean that neither Christmas Day nor Boxing Day will be observed as bank holidays on their calendar dates in 2027, although the public holidays themselves remain in place through the substitute system.

UK Christmas Bank Holidays Moved in 2026 and 2027 as Substitute Days Replace Weekend Dates © Shutterstock

Wider Bank Holiday Schedule Confirmed through 2028

The published schedule also confirms other bank holiday dates for 2027. New Year’s Day will be observed on Friday 1 January, while Good Friday and Easter Monday fall on 26 March and 29 March respectively.

Further bank holidays in England and Wales during 2027 are scheduled for Monday 3 May, Monday 31 May and Monday 30 August. These correspond to the Early May bank holiday, Spring bank holiday and Summer bank holiday.

According to government information , England and Wales have eight bank holidays each year, Scotland has nine and Northern Ireland has ten. It also highlights previous occasions when additional bank holidays were granted. An extra bank holiday was introduced on 8 May 2023 to mark the coronation of King Charles III. Earlier examples included public holidays for the royal wedding in 2011 and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

The government guidance also reminds employers and employees that there is no automatic entitlement to paid leave on bank or public holidays. It further notes that bank holidays can affect the timing of benefit payments. Bank holidays were first introduced following the Bank Holiday Act of 1871, drafted by Sir John Lubbock, a banker, politician and scientific writer who later became the first Baron of Avebury.

The UK holidays calendar is set for an unusual change over the next two years.
