The option comes through Pass Plus, a post-test course recognised by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

The scheme is aimed at improving driving skills after passing the practical test and, according to GOV.UK guidance, may also lead to insurance discounts depending on the provider and individual circumstances.

Pass Plus is available to drivers at any stage after passing their test, although official guidance says it is likely to be most useful during the first year of independent driving. To take part, drivers must use an approved driving instructor registered with the programme.

According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the course is designed to build confidence and promote safer driving across a wider range of conditions than some learners may have experienced before gaining their licence.

What Pass Plus includes and how the training works

Pass Plus is a practical training course lasting at least six hours. According to GOV.UK, it is divided into six modules covering different driving environments and conditions. The modules include driving in town, in all weather conditions, on rural roads, at night, on dual carriageways and on motorways. The guidance states that all modules should normally involve practical driving, although local conditions can mean that some elements are delivered through theory-based instruction.

Drivers usually spend at least five and a half hours behind the wheel during the programme. There is no final test at the end of the course. Instead, participants are assessed throughout each module and must reach the required standard across all sections.

Booking is arranged directly with a Pass Plus registered approved driving instructor. GOV.UK states that drivers can contact the DVSA to confirm whether an instructor is registered and will need the instructor’s name and ADI number. The total cost varies depending on location, instructor or driving school, and the amount of training required.

Pass Plus Six-Hour Driver Training Course Covering Six Road Conditions With No Final Test ©Shutterstock

Local council discounts and how insurance savings may apply

Some local authorities provide financial support towards the cost of completing Pass Plus. According to GOV.UK, eligibility depends on living within the council’s area.

The listed areas currently include Cumbria in north-west England, Hampshire in the south-east and Wiltshire in the south-west. In Scotland, support is listed through Argyll and Bute Council, Fife Council, Inverclyde Council and South Lanarkshire Council. The guidance also states that all local councils in Wales offer discounted Pass Plus courses through Pass Plus Cymru.

Drivers seeking an insurance discount must apply for their own Pass Plus certificate once they complete the course. The process requires a signed training report form from both the driver and instructor, which is then sent to the DVSA for certification.

According to GOV.UK, certificates are usually issued by post within two weeks. Insurance reductions are not guaranteed. The amount available depends on the insurer and not every company recognises Pass Plus.
