The initiative forms part of wider efforts to ease household energy costs amid continued financial strain. The scheme allows participating households to accumulate free electricity hours by shifting usage away from peak weekday periods. According to the company, customers could earn up to 64 hours of complimentary electricity over the course of the month.

Scheme Mechanics and Scale of Savings

EDF’s Sunday Saver programme rewards customers who reduce their electricity use during high-demand weekday evening periods. In return, they receive free electricity on Sundays, with the number of hours earned depending on how much consumption is shifted.

According to EDF, participants can gain between four and 16 hours of free electricity each week. Over a full month, this could amount to as much as 64 hours, regardless of weather conditions. The company reports that since the scheme was first introduced in 2024, customers have collectively accumulated more than 22.5 million hours of free electricity.

This has translated into total savings of £7.2 million across participating households, according to the supplier. On average, those enrolled in the programme receive around 18 hours of free electricity per month.

Joe Souto, director of retail at EDF, stated that the initiative is designed to encourage flexible energy use. According to his remarks, the programme enables customers to “flex their electricity use during busy weekday evenings” while reducing bills and benefiting from free power. Registration for the May scheme is open until 11:59pm on 3 May, with the programme beginning the following day. Customers must sign up via EDF’s platform to participate.

EDF Sunday Saver challenge ©EDF/Meta

Practical Steps and Additional Tariff Options

EDF has outlined several ways households can adjust their energy usage to maximise benefits under the scheme. According to the company, avoiding energy-intensive appliances such as tumble dryers during peak periods can contribute to higher rewards. Instead, it suggests drying clothes outdoors where possible.

Other measures include running dishwashers overnight or during early morning hours, rather than during peak evening demand. Keeping blinds and curtains closed in unused rooms may also help maintain cooler indoor temperatures without additional energy consumption.

The supplier also advises unplugging devices and chargers during busy periods and relying on battery power where feasible. For families, switching from indoor electronic activities to outdoor alternatives can further reduce electricity usage during key hours.

Electric vehicle owners are encouraged to charge their vehicles outside peak times, while preparing meals in advance and reheating them later in the week can help limit cooking-related energy demand.

Alongside Sunday Saver, EDF offers additional tariffs such as FreePhase, which provides free electricity when renewable generation exceeds demand. According to the company, customers on this tariff received 37 hours of free electricity over a recent two-week period.

The return of the scheme comes against a backdrop of fluctuating energy costs. While Ofgem has recently lowered the energy price cap, according to industry reporting, households continue to face elevated bills linked to global energy market conditions. EDF maintains that the programme is intended to provide practical support during this period, allowing customers to reduce costs through changes in usage patterns rather than reduced consumption alone.

EDF is bringing back its Sunday Saver scheme, giving customers the opportunity to earn free electricity by shifting usage.
