A shortage affecting a key blood pressure drug and a recall involving a common painkiller have prompted warnings to patients and healthcare providers.

The developments come amid broader pressure on medicine supply chains, with pharmacists reporting rising costs and limited availability of everyday treatments. Together, these issues highlight growing strain within the system that supplies essential medication to millions.

Shortage of Ramipril Raises Concerns for Long-Term Patients

A “serious shortage protocol” has been issued for ramipril 1.25mg capsules, a medicine commonly prescribed for high blood pressure, heart failure and recovery after heart attacks. According to the National Pharmacy Association (NPA), around three million items of ramipril are prescribed every month in England, underlining the scale of potential disruption.

Ramipril works by widening blood vessels, allowing the heart to pump blood more easily. It is available in several forms, including tablets, capsules and liquid. The current shortage specifically affects the 1.25mg capsule dosage, with guidance stating that patients should only be supplied with one month’s treatment at a time.

NPA chairman Olivier Picard warned that some pharmacies are struggling to obtain certain strengths of the drug, while costs have risen where stock is still available. According to the NPA, pharmacists are increasingly encountering supply issues across a range of essential medicines, placing pressure on both providers and patients.

Picard also indicated that while alternative treatments exist, their supply must be carefully managed. He called for greater flexibility, suggesting pharmacists should be allowed to substitute prescriptions without requiring patients to return to their GP.

The broader context includes what the NPA describes as a fragile global supply chain, affected by international instability and longstanding funding pressures within the UK pharmacy sector. These factors, according to the organisation, have contributed to both shortages and rising prices.

SSP issued for Ramipril 1.25mg capsules

Effective today, SSP087 provides that where supplies are available, but the prescription is for more than one month’s supply the total quantity supplied under this protocol is to be equivalent to one months’ supply of Ramipril 1.25mg…
— Community Pharmacy England (@ComPharmEngland) April 22, 2026

Napralief Recall Highlights Safety Concerns over Missing Dosage Information

At the same time, a separate warning has been issued regarding Napralief 250mg gastro-resistant tablets, a widely used pain relief medication containing naproxen. According to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), specific batches have been recalled due to missing safety and dosage information from packaging and patient leaflets.

The affected batches, identified as B51496, B51497 and B51102, lack key instructions designed to ensure safe use. These include the maximum daily dose of three tablets and guidance on how to take the medication over a three-day period. The omission also extends to warnings regarding potential allergic reactions, visual disturbances and advice related to medical tests

Napralief is commonly prescribed for conditions such as muscle pain, joint injuries and period pain, with more than seven million prescriptions issued annually in England. According to the MHRA, the medicine remains safe when used correctly, though complete information is considered essential to minimise risks.

Dr Alison Cave, the MHRA’s Chief Safety Officer, stated that while minor dosing errors are unlikely to cause harm, patients rely on accurate instructions to use medicines properly. She advised patients to continue following the correct dosage guidance and to seek medical advice if they have concerns.

Healthcare professionals have been instructed to stop supplying the affected batches and return remaining stock. Patients experiencing side effects are encouraged to report them through the MHRA’s Yellow Card scheme. These parallel developments reflect mounting challenges within the UK’s medicine supply system, where both availability and safety concerns are increasingly coming into focus.

Pharmacies across the UK are reporting mounting pressure as supply issues affect widely used medicines.
