As inflation continues to squeeze household budgets, UK grocery prices have surged by 4.3%, signaling a further blow to consumers. This sharp rise comes ahead of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ much-anticipated Spring Statement, with the government under increasing scrutiny as it prepares to navigate a rapidly changing global economic landscape.

Grocery inflation has been a key issue for UK households for the past year, with the latest figures showing an uptick in February, reversing the downward trend seen in the previous months. This increase is particularly concerning as the cost of living remains high and disposable incomes continue to be strained. According to market research firm Worldpanel by Numerator, shoppers have been increasingly cautious with their spending, especially around seasonal events like Valentine’s Day and Shrove Tuesday.

Shoppers Feeling the Pinch: Valentine’s Day and Pancake Mixes

The surge in grocery prices can be partly attributed to special shopping events and seasonal trends. Valentine’s Day saw a last-minute rush for premium meal deals, with nearly 12% of households opting for them on the Friday night before the occasion. This demand, combined with the rising costs of key ingredients, has contributed to the overall inflation.

In particular, the cost of pancake-related products saw a significant increase, with pre-made mixes up 114% in the week leading up to Shrove Tuesday. At the same time, those opting to make their own pancakes faced a 6% increase in ingredient prices compared to the previous year, bringing the total cost of key items to £7.77.

Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, noted that while the inflation rate for groceries is still high, it has eased somewhat from previous months. However, the outlook for the coming months remains uncertain, with Easter likely to bring continued pressure on prices, particularly for chocolate, which has seen a 9.3% increase year-on-year.

The Impact on Online Grocery Shopping and Retailers’ Performance

As grocery inflation climbs, online shopping has gained significant traction, with internet sales up 9.7% year-on-year, according to Worldpanel. The convenience of online shopping is drawing a wider demographic of consumers, with more affluent families in London and the South East leading the charge. However, the appeal is spreading to other regions, as shoppers seek to avoid the inconvenience of rising prices and crowded stores.

Retailers are also feeling the impact of the rising costs, with varying degrees of success. Ocado, for instance, has continued to show strong growth, maintaining its position as the fastest-growing grocer since September 2025.

Meanwhile, Lidl has also enjoyed double-digit growth for the 12th consecutive period. However, larger players like Asda and Co-op have reported declines in sales, with Asda’s sales dropping by 2.6% compared to last year. Tesco and Sainsbury’s, on the other hand, managed to secure growth, with Tesco’s market share increasing to 28.5%, and Sainsbury’s expanding its market share to 16.1%.

Chancellor Reeves will likely address these challenges during her Spring Statement, where she is expected to reiterate the government’s position on the UK economy, asserting that it is “stronger and more secure.”
