The UK Passport Office is encouraging citizens to apply for or renew passports online rather than through traditional paper methods. In addition to reducing the overall cost, this method often delivers faster results, especially for standard applications.

The move is particularly relevant for those planning trips in the near future, as standard online passport applications are currently processed in about three weeks. As explained by the Passport Office, the timeframe begins when the necessary documents are received, not from the application date itself.

Online Service Saves Time and Money

Travellers applying for UK passports now have a more cost-effective option, as the Passport Office highlights the benefits of submitting requests online. According to an official post by the agency on X, formerly Twitter, applicants “usually get [their] passport within 3 weeks using our standard service.” The Office also noted that online applications are “cheaper and easier,” reducing the overall fee by £12.50 compared to the paper alternative.

At present, the standard adult passport fee is £94.50 when applying online, compared to £107 via a paper form. For children, the online cost stands at £61.50, while the postal route comes in at £74. The service can be used for first-time applications, renewals, replacements, or updates. Payment must be made by debit or credit card at the time of submission.

According to information provided by the Money Saving Expert team, more than seven million Britons took advantage of the online route last year, avoiding unnecessary charges. It also warned that 360,000 people overpaid by using the postal system. The only official place to apply remains the GOV.UK website, with external services offering no additional benefit and sometimes charging extra fees.

Despite the focus on online applications, traditional methods remain available. Paper forms can still be picked up and submitted at Post Offices. However, these tend to take longer and require individuals to provide their own passport-sized photos. A Check and Send option is offered for both paper and digital formats, with Post Office staff available to assist for an additional fee.
