With just days remaining, HMRC is reminding Self Assessment taxpayers of the crucial 10-digit reference needed to avoid automatic penalties. The alert comes as the online tax return deadline fast approaches.

As the Self Assessment deadline of 31 January nears, millions across the UK are being urged to check they have the correct information to submit their tax return on time. A central requirement is the Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), a 10-digit number needed to complete the process online.

This warning comes during one of HMRC’s busiest periods, with taxpayers scrambling to finalise returns for the 2024–25 financial year. An immediate £100 fine is applied the moment the deadline is missed, regardless of whether tax is owed. With the volume of submissions increasing each day, HMRC is aiming to prevent avoidable penalties by encouraging users to use its official mobile app.

10-Digit UTR Required to File before Looming Deadline

HMRC has issued a direct warning to taxpayers that they must have their 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference to complete a Self Assessment return before 31 January. According to HMRC, failing to submit a return on time results in a £100 penalty, with further fines imposed the longer a return remains overdue.

Three months late triggers an additional £10 daily penalty, capped at £900. At six months, there is a further fine of either £300 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is greater. At twelve months, the same penalty is applied again. These penalties apply whether or not any tax is owed, highlighting the importance of filing regardless of financial situation.

The Unique Taxpayer Reference is a mandatory piece of information required for completion of the form, and its absence prevents users from finalising their tax return altogether. In a video published by the department, HMRC advises: “You’ll need this 10 digit number to complete your self assessment tax return.”

The reference number is unique to each individual and is issued when someone registers for Self Assessment. HMRC’s concern is that many may be unaware of where to find it, particularly if they haven’t filed in several years or have changed contact details.

HMRC App Simplifies UTR Access and Reduces Phone Queues

In an effort to streamline the process and reduce reliance on HMRC‘s phone lines, the department is urging users to locate their UTR through the official HMRC app. According to information provided by HMRC, the app is free, secure, and compatible with all major smartphones and tablets.

Once signed in, there are two primary ways to access the UTR. The first is through the ‘Your Details’ section, where the number is displayed directly. The second method is via the main menu under the ‘Self Assessment’ category. In both cases, users can copy the number to save or share it securely with an accountant or tax adviser.

According to HMRC, the app not only shows the UTR but also provides details about tax owed, due dates, and options to make payments directly. The department emphasises that this method eliminates the need to phone for assistance, noting that sign-in can be completed using a six-digit PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition.

The HMRC app is available via Google Play and the App Store. Encouraging its use, the department states: “You can use the app at any time to find your Unique Taxpayer Reference, so you won’t need to call us once you’ve used the app.” By highlighting this digital solution, HMRC hopes to ease last-minute pressures and minimise missed submissions ahead of the statutory deadline.
