Low-income households across England are being encouraged to apply for emergency financial help in 2026, as part of the government’s ongoing Household Support Fundinitiative. The fund, designed to assist people facing hardship, enables eligible residents to access one-off payments of up to £500.

The scheme is delivered through local councils, which determine how funds are allocated in their area. While the nature and availability of the support vary, the payments may be used to cover utility bills, buy food, or help with other basic needs. The application process requires individuals to demonstrate financial hardship and provide recent financial records.

Applicants must submit details of their benefits, the latest bank statements for all savings and current accounts, and any debt-related documentation. Additionally, the council reserves the right to refer applicants to external support partners. Submission of an application implies agreement for data sharing under these terms. The deadline for applying is set for 31 March 2026.

Additional Support Varies across Councils and Regions
