First Bus York has announced a set of timetable changes for the Christmas and New Year period, with specific adjustments to city, Park & Ride, and University of York routes. This is a vital update for those planning to travel during the holidays, whether it’s for shopping, visiting Christmas markets, or attending local events.

For those relying on public transport to move around York, these changes could affect your plans, especially with some services operating at different times or not at all on certain days. Importantly, the festive timetable also includes free travel for certain groups, such as concessionary pass holders, which will help ensure that residents and visitors can still make use of buses without incurring extra costs. The full services are set to resume on January 3, after a series of adjustments designed to cater to the festive period.

Adjusted Service on Key Days

Several key dates will see significant changes to the bus schedule in York. According to the First Bus timetable, on Christmas Eve, the city network will run a Saturday service, while Park & Ride buses will follow a similar Saturday timetable but with earlier finishes. The University of York will operate on a non-term time Saturday schedule. However, Christmas Day will see a complete cessation of bus services across the city.

Boxing Day brings another shift in operations. Only Park & Ride services 3, 7, and 9 will be available, providing essential connections to and from the city. From December 27 to 28, the city network will return to its normal Saturday and Sunday service, providing limited but regular services for post-Christmas shopping and leisure activities.

On December 29 and 30, the city network will run a Saturday timetable, but buses will finish earlier to allow for New Year’s Eve celebrations. As with Christmas Day, no services will operate on New Year’s Day. However, from January 2, services on the city network and University of York routes will follow a Saturday timetable, before full operations resume on January 3.

Park & Ride Service Updates

York’s Park & Ride services are seeing additional adjustments to help meet the increased demand over the festive season. Between November 9 and December 21, extra buses were added to the Park & Ride service on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, especially for popular routes like Rawcliffe Bar, Askham Bar, and Grimston Bar. These changes were designed to ease the burden on the city’s transport network, offering more frequent services to accommodate the influx of holiday shoppers and tourists.

Park & Ride services will continue throughout the festive period, with a return trip priced at £3.90. Additionally, families will benefit from an offer allowing up to three children aged 16 or under to travel for free when accompanied by an adult. This will make it easier for families to take part in the festivities in the city centre without worrying about transport costs.

The City of York is also collaborating with Visit York to offer exclusive discounts for Park & Ride users. If you purchase a Park & Ride ticket, you can claim 10% off the Visit York Pass, which provides access to over 35 local attractions and savings in participating shops and eateries across the city. This partnership helps visitors enjoy York’s holiday magic while saving money on local experiences.
