Free bus initiatives in the West Midlands have led to nine million journeys in the past 18 months, according to regional transport officials. The schemes, backed by a \u00a320 million government programme<\/strong>, are designed to make bus travel more attractive and affordable while supporting families, workers and the local economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest measure will allow parents and carers to travel free during the upcoming half-term, easing financial pressures on households and encouraging more people to consider bus travel<\/strong>. The move is part of a broader push by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) and Mayor Richard Parker<\/a> to reshape the region\u2019s transport network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Millions of Journeys Created Through Incentives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to TfWM, the combined impact of these schemes has generated around nine million <\/strong>bus <\/a>journeys across the region. The incentives have included free evening travel in the run-up to Christmas to boost the night-time economy, as well as complimentary passes for hospital staff, apprentices, care leavers and charities. Partnerships have also been struck with large employers to promote commuting by bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u00a320 million passenger incentive programme, funded through the national Bus Service Improvement Plan<\/strong>, has been central to these efforts. Its aim is straightforward: to encourage a shift towards public transport by removing financial and practical barriers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Half-Term Scheme to Support Families<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The newest initiative focuses on families during the October half-term. Parents and carers can apply for a Swift travel <\/strong>card pre-loaded with free bus travel between 27 October<\/strong> and 2 November<\/strong>. Those who take part will also be offered a 25 per cent discount on an additional week\u2019s travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Richard Parker said the offer came at a time when \u201cfamily budgets are stretched\u201d and described it as a way to make outings cheaper, easier and greener. He added that while these incentives run, the region is preparing to bring bus services<\/a> back under public control in a bid to improve reliability and accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applications for the half-term scheme open on 6 October via the TfWM website<\/strong>. Successful applicants will be contacted by email with instructions on how to redeem their free travel through the Swift account system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By targeting both occasional users and those who have stopped travelling by bus, the scheme is expected to draw more people back onto public transport.
