The offer is open to anyone with a smart meter, regardless of their current energy supplier, and is aimed at offsetting the effects of the latest rise in the energy price cap.

Participants must download the free Uswitch app and register by the end of October. Once enrolled, they will be able to choose a five-hour window of free electricity each weekend throughout November — a move that could generate modest savings and ease pressure on the national grid.

Free Energy Sessions During Off-Peak Hours

The 25 free hours of electricity will be spread across five weekends in November, with participants able to select one five-hour time slot per week. Time slots are available on Saturday and Sunday, split between morning and afternoon periods. According to Uswitch, this format is designed to shift energy consumption to off-peak times and support grid stability.

Once each session concludes, the app calculates the electricity consumed and assigns a monetary value to it, which appears in the user’s in-app ‘Earn’ tab. These funds can be transferred to a personal bank account at the end of the month. Uswitch estimates that using a tumble dryer 15 times during these sessions could earn a household around £11.94, while running 20 ten-minute electric showers might return £6.59.

Natalie Mathie, energy expert at Uswitch.com, noted: “If households move all of their energy-intensive tasks for the week into the free sessions, this will not only earn them money but also help reduce strain on the grid throughout the week.”

No Supplier Switch Needed, but Deadline Is Firm

Unlike many energy offers, this scheme does not require customers to change providers. Anyone with a compatible smart meter can take part. The initiative forms part of Uswitch’s broader Demand Flexibility Scheme, which includes its existing Reduce and Earn sessions.

Participants can still take advantage of similar schemes offered by their current suppliers. According to Uswitch, the flexibility offered by their app means households can schedule laundry, dishwashing, and cooking to coincide with free periods. Common appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, kettles, ovens, and air fryers are among those highlighted as offering the most tangible returns.

The offer arrives at a time when energy bills are expected to rise significantly. According to Uswitch, homes on a standard tariff with average usage could spend £140 in October, up from £63 in September — a £77 increase driven by colder weather and the new price cap.

Uswitch is offering a new nationwide scheme that could cut electricity costs this winter — and anyone with a smart meter can take part.
