According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devonlive.com\/news\/cost-of-living\/dates-dwp-send-300-letters-10451011\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.devonlive.com\/news\/cost-of-living\/dates-dwp-send-300-letters-10451011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Devon Live<\/a>, while the payments are automatic for most, some pensioners may need to check their entitlement or apply before the official deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DWP Clarifies Eligibility Rules and Age-Based Amounts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a June announcement, the government stated: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Nine million pensioners to receive Winter Fuel Payments this winter as all pensioners in England and Wales with an income of, or below, \u00a335,000 a year will benefit from a Winter Fuel Payment.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GOV.UK<\/a><\/em>, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>You can get a Winter Fuel Payment if you were born before September 22, 1959 and live in England or Wales.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount received depends on age and personal situation during the <em>qualifying week<\/em>, which runs from <strong>September 15 to 21, 2025<\/strong>. As the government notes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The amount you get is based on when you were born and your circumstances between September 15 and 21, 2025. This is called the &#8216;qualifying week&#8217;.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Payment bands include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u00a3100<\/strong> for those born between <strong>September 22, 1945<\/strong> and <strong>September 21, 1959<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u00a3150<\/strong> for individuals born <strong>before September 22, 1945<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Up to <strong><em>\u00a3300<\/em><\/strong> in total depending on benefits, household situation and top-ups<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even residents of care homes may be eligible, provided they meet the general criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Won\u2019t Qualify for the Payment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite wide coverage, not everyone will qualify. According to the <strong><em>DWP<\/em><\/strong>, pensioners will <strong>not<\/strong> be eligible if they:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Need permission to enter the UK and their granted leave prohibits access to public funds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Were in hospital for <strong>the full qualifying week and the year before that<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Were in <strong>prison<\/strong> for the full week from September 15 to 21, 2025<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Live <strong>outside<\/strong> England and Wales<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who meet the requirements typically receive the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.econostrum.info\/uk\/winter-fuel-payment-2025-important-deadline-for-pensioners\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"112120\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Winter Fuel Payment<\/a><\/em><\/strong> automatically, especially if they already receive a <strong>state pension<\/strong> or qualifying <strong>benefits<\/strong>. However, if someone believes they qualify and doesn\u2019t receive a notification, they can apply manually. The <strong>application deadline<\/strong> for winter 2025-2026 is <strong>March 31, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Higher-Income Pensioners Will Be Taxed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast to previous concerns over the future of the scheme, the government reversed initial proposals to cut support. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/winter-fuel-payment\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/winter-fuel-payment\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The scheme<\/a> will proceed, but with a mechanism in place to <strong>reclaim payments<\/strong> from pensioners earning more than <strong>\u00a335,000<\/strong> a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong><em>DWP<\/em><\/strong> clarified: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Pensioners above the \u00a335,000 threshold will have the full amount of the Winter Fuel Payment they received automatically collected via PAYE, or via their Self-Assessment return.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The department added: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>No one will need to register with HMRC for this or take any further action.
