A recent government uplift in state pensions has increased weekly payments for millions of older Britons. At the same time, key benefits such as <\/strong>Pension Credit<\/em><\/strong> <\/strong>remain under-claimed, despite unlocking access to a wide range of free services and financial support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Pension Rates and the Widening Income Gap<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As of April 2025, the UK government introduced a 4.1% increase to both the basic<\/em> and new State Pension<\/a><\/em> payments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)<\/em>, men born before 6 April 1951 and women born before 6 April 1953 receiving the basic State Pension now get up to \u00a3176.45 weekly<\/strong> \u2014 a total of \u00a39,175.40 annually for those eligible for the full rate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discrepancy highlights the importance of supplementary benefits. Pension Credit<\/em>, in particular, provides essential support to retirees on low incomes<\/strong> and grants access to several other forms of aid, including rent support, energy bill reductions, and health-related exemptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional Benefits Worth Over \u00a39,900 for Eligible Pensioners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For those who qualify for Pension Credit<\/em>, a wide range of financial advantages become accessible. The average entitlement from the benefit alone is worth \u00a34,300 annually, according to Royal London<\/em>. Sarah Pennells<\/strong>, the group\u2019s consumer finance specialist, noted that nearly 30% of eligible pensioners have not checked whether they qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to direct income support, claimants can receive up to \u00a31,000 in Housing Benefit<\/em><\/strong>, around \u00a31,600 off Council Tax<\/em><\/strong>, and a \u00a3150 reduction in heating bills<\/em> through the Warm Home Discount<\/em> scheme. Health-related savings include free NHS prescriptions<\/a><\/em> (typically \u00a39.90 per item), dental treatment<\/em> worth up to \u00a31,000 per year, and up to \u00a3215 in eye care<\/em> support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other entitlements feature a free TV licence<\/em> for those aged 75 and over (\u00a3174.50), a \u00a324 Royal Mail redirection discount<\/em>, and Attendance Allowance<\/em> of up to \u00a35,740.80 annually for those with severe disabilities. Applications for Pension Credit can be submitted up to four months before reaching State Pension age and backdated for up to three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
