The schemes form part of a wider drive to support <em>Transport for Greater Manchester\u2019s (TfGM)<\/em> \u2018<strong>Vision Zero<\/strong>\u2019 ambition of eliminating all road deaths and serious injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of <strong>\u00a3543,000<\/strong> has been allocated to <em>Bury Council<\/em> to implement targeted <a href=\"https:\/\/en.econostrum.info\/uk\/leicester-roads-gyratory-overhaul\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"106300\">road <\/a>safety improvements. The funding comes through the <em>Greater Manchester-wide sustainable transport settlement<\/em>, which prioritises interventions at locations identified as injury collision hotspots or high-risk zones for vulnerable road users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New Speed Limits Aim to Protect Children and Local Communities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Three new 20mph areas will be implemented across <em>Bury<\/em>, focusing on areas near schools and residential streets. According to <em>Bury Council<\/em>, the <strong>Church Street area<\/strong> will see a full 20mph zone introduced, complete with traffic calming features designed to reduce speeds and enhance pedestrian visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>Prestwich<\/em>, <strong>Charlton Avenue<\/strong> will be designated a 20mph school zone to ensure safer access for pupils, while a similar scheme will be introduced in the <strong>Clough Street area<\/strong> of <em>Radcliffe<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These zones are expected to deliver improvements in safety outcomes by reducing the likelihood and severity of collisions, particularly those involving children and non-motorised road users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor <a href=\"https:\/\/councildecisions.bury.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Alan Quinn<\/em><\/a>, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said the measures are intended to \u201ccarry out relatively modest road safety schemes which can provide high value for money, at known hotspots.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative is aligned with <em>TfGM\u2019s road danger reduction strategy<\/em>, which seeks to make travel safer for all users through evidence-led interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Upgraded Crossings and Traffic Features to Improve Pedestrian Safety<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to reduced speed limits, several infrastructure upgrades have been confirmed. A <strong>new mini-roundabout<\/strong> will be constructed at the junction of <em>B6196 Bury Old Road and Arthur Lane<\/em> in <em>Ainsworth<\/em>, improving traffic flow and lowering collision risks at the intersection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, a <strong>zebra crossing<\/strong> is planned for <em>Sunnybank Road in Unsworth<\/em>, close to <em>Bloomfield Drive<\/em>, to provide safer pedestrian access in a residential zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further schemes include the <strong>upgrade of a pelican crossing<\/strong> on <em>A56 Walmersley Road<\/em> in <em>Chesham<\/em> to a modern <strong>puffin crossing<\/strong>, and the installation of a new puffin crossing on <em>A56 Bury New Road<\/em> near <em>Park View Road<\/em> in <em>Prestwich<\/em>. Four outdated interactive safety signs will be replaced at various locations, and new school patrol warning lights will be installed on <em>Radcliffe Road<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council also confirmed funds will be used for <strong>remedial <a href=\"https:\/\/en.econostrum.info\/uk\/traffic-charges-hit-londoners-today\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"107458\">traffic <\/a>calming<\/strong>, including lining and signage updates across the borough.
