These adjustments, reported by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/cost-of-living\/vehicle-tax-changes-see-pay-31054983\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/cost-of-living\/vehicle-tax-changes-see-pay-31054983\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manchester Evening News<\/a><\/strong>, primarily impact <strong>electric and low-emission vehicles<\/strong>, which were previously exempt from road tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The changes will also affect <strong>petrol, diesel, and alternative fuel vehicles<\/strong>, with tax rates varying based on <strong>CO2 emissions, vehicle type, and market value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Electric and Low-Emission Vehicle Owners to Face New Tax Obligations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>April 2025<\/strong>, owners of <strong>electric and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.econostrum.info\/uk\/millions-of-vehicles-hit-with-higher-taxes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"103828\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">low-emission vehicles<\/a><\/strong> will be required to pay <strong>vehicle excise duty (VED)<\/strong> for the first time. Newly registered electric cars will incur an <strong>initial tax charge of \u00a310<\/strong> in their first year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vehicles purchased between <strong>1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025<\/strong> will be subject to an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.econostrum.info\/uk\/uks-first-tourist-tax-edinburgh\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"102729\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">annual tax <\/a>of \u00a3195<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, electric vehicles with a list price of <strong>\u00a340,000 or more<\/strong> will be subject to the <strong>Expensive Car Supplement<\/strong>. This supplement introduces an <strong>additional charge of \u00a3410 per year for five years<\/strong>, starting in the second year of ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, the total tax for these vehicles will be <strong>\u00a3620 per year from year two to year six<\/strong>. From <strong>year seven onwards<\/strong>, the tax will reduce to <strong>\u00a3195 annually<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Petrol and Diesel Vehicle Tax: Rates Based on Emissions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Petrol and diesel vehicle owners will continue to pay road tax based on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.econostrum.info\/uk\/new-vehicle-tax-rules-coming-in-april\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"103140\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CO2 emissions<\/strong> <\/a>recorded at the time of registration. Higher emission vehicles will face higher tax rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diesel cars that do not comply with the <strong>Real Driving Emissions 2 (RDE2)<\/strong> standard for <strong>nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions<\/strong> may be subject to <strong>additional charges<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second-year tax rate and subsequent charges may vary depending on vehicle type and government updates to tax structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternative Fuel Vehicles: New Tax Considerations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vehicles using <strong>bioethanol, liquid petroleum gas (LPG), or hybrid technology<\/strong> will also see <a href=\"https:\/\/en.econostrum.info\/uk\/uk-drivers-facing-devastating-tax-hikes-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"101072\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adjustments in taxation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like <strong>petrol and diesel vehicles<\/strong>, their first-year tax rates will be determined based on <strong>CO2 emissions<\/strong> at the time of registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tax applied in subsequent years may differ depending on the vehicle\u2019s classification and fuel type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Annual Tax Rates for Electric Vehicles From April 2025<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>electric vehicles <\/strong>priced under<strong> \u00a340,000<\/strong>, the <strong>first-year tax will be \u00a310<\/strong>, followed by an <strong>annual tax of \u00a3195<\/strong> from the second year onwards. This rate will remain in place through <strong>year seven and beyond<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>electric vehicles priced over \u00a340,000<\/strong>, the <strong>first-year tax will also be \u00a310<\/strong>.
