Closure of the \u2018Emergency Tax Code\u2019 Loophole<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Retirees now have more options when it comes to accessing Defined Contribution<\/strong><\/a> pensions, as they can take money out in installments since the implementation of Pension Freedoms in 2015. However, HMRC<\/strong> <\/a>applied temporary emergency tax <\/a>codes<\/strong> to these withdrawals, which frequently led to tax deductions that were higher than warranted<\/strong>. The overpaid tax had to then be recouped by pensioners through a convoluted and time-consuming procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to HMRC, this system has collectively cost pensioners over \u00a31.3 billion <\/strong>in overpayments since its inception.
