As temperatures plummet this winter, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will provide financial support to vulnerable households through the Cold Weather Payment scheme. The programme, running from 1 November 2024 to 31 March 2025, aims to ease the financial strain of heating costs during prolonged periods of cold weather.

The Cold Weather Payment is a £25 grant issued to households experiencing at least seven consecutive days of freezing temperatures. This payment is designed to help individuals manage rising energy bills during the coldest months, when the cost of keeping homes warm can be particularly challenging.

Last winter, some regions qualified for multiple payments under the scheme. In these areas, eligible households received up to £75 in total during the 2023/2024 season. For the current scheme, the payment rate remains £25 for every seven-day period where the local temperature is recorded as 0°C or below.

The payments are automatically issued to individuals receiving specific means-tested benefits, such as:

The DWP uses temperature monitoring equipment to track conditions across the UK by postcode. When a seven-day period of sub-zero temperatures is recorded, the payment is automatically triggered for households in the affected area. Eligible recipients should receive the payment within 14 working days of the qualifying cold spell.
