Waitrose has urgently recalled a popular ready meal, the Indian Takeaway for 2, after some packs were mistakenly filled with spring rolls containing sesame and soya – allergens not declared on the product’s label. The recall is critical for anyone with allergies to these ingredients, as it may lead to severe, life-threatening reactions.

This recall concerns 1412g packs of the meal, with a use-by date of July 25, 2025. The mispackaging error could put those with sesame or soya allergies at significant risk, as these allergens were not listed on the packaging, prompting an immediate warning from food safety authorities.

Health Risks for Allergy Sufferers

According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the mispacking of this meal is a potential health hazard, particularly for individuals with allergies to sesame and soya.

These ingredients are common allergens, with sesame being one of the most prevalent. Statistics show that around 1 in 300 adults suffer from a sesame allergy, while soya is also a well-known food trigger.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction to either sesame or soya range from mild issues like an itchy mouth or swelling around the lips and eyes to more severe cases of anaphylaxis, which can cause tightening of the airways, breathing difficulties, and loss of consciousness.

The FSA issued a statement advising customers who have purchased the affected product to return it to any Waitrose store for a full refund. This measure is part of the broader efforts to protect public health and prevent potential allergic reactions.

Steps for Consumers and Public Awareness

The recall specifically impacts Waitrose customers who have purchased the meal since it was first made available. The FSA emphasized the importance of checking product labels, especially for those with known allergies to common food ingredients.

Waitrose, in cooperation with allergy organisations, is working to notify affected customers and the public at large. In addition, the supermarket chain is expected to increase its efforts in making allergen information clearer and more prominent on its packaging, particularly in light of this incident.

Consumers with sesame or soya allergies are encouraged to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms after consuming any of the affected meals. The FSA’s guidance is clear: do not eat the product and return it to the store for a full refund.
