UK’s Scorching 31°C Heatwave: High-Pressure System to Bring Record-Breaking Temperatures

A high-pressure system is pushing temperatures in the UK to soar, with the southeast expected to hit 31°C. The heatwave will bring dry, sunny conditions, especially by the end of the week.

The UK is preparing for a significant rise in temperatures in the coming days, as a high-pressure system moves across the country. Forecasters predict that temperatures could reach as high as 31°C, especially in the southeast, while other regions are likely to see mid-20s.

The change follows weeks of milder weather, as low-pressure systems influenced conditions across the country. According to The Mirror, the heat is expected to intensify, and areas like the Midlands and the north will experience more moderate temperatures.

The Met Office has also noted that the forecast for late June remains uncertain, with limited details provided about specific weather patterns.

A Rise in Temperatures After Weeks of Mild Weather

Following several weeks of milder conditions driven by low-pressure systems from the Atlantic, the UK’s weather has taken a turn. This past Friday, the hottest day of the year so far was recorded, with temperatures hitting 29.4°C in Levington, Suffolk.

However, the heat also led to storms, especially in the southeast, where a month’s worth of rain fell overnight, causing localized flooding.

High Pressure System Brings a Return to Heat

Next week, a high-pressure system will return, bringing with it dry conditions and a significant rise in temperatures. According to BBC weather forecaster Louise Lear, the UK will experience mostly dry weather until the following weekend, with the heat intensifying as the days go on. Maps from WXCHARTS predict that temperatures will peak on Friday, June 20.

As we go through the next few days, high pressure is set to return and there will be no significant rain in the forecast until we get to the following weekend – said Lear.

The temperature is expected to rise progressively as the week goes on, with the southeast of England potentially hitting 31°C and other areas seeing temperatures in the mid-20s.

Regional Temperature Variations

In more detail, the southeast of England is expected to experience a high of 31°C, while much of the rest of the country will see temperatures range from 19°C to 24°C.

Birmingham is set to reach 21°C, and the north of England will see temperatures between 17°C and 23°C, with the northwest coast experiencing cooler temperatures.

In Wales, temperatures are forecasted to range from 14°C to 20°C, while Scotland will see a broad range from 11°C to 18°C. By Thursday, an easterly feed will start drawing in warmer air from the continent, bringing the sunniest and driest day of the week.

As we move into Thursday, we start to tap into more of an easterly feed, which will drag in more warmth from the near continent. It will be the sunniest and driest day of the week, with temperatures in Scotland peaking at 24°C and potentially rising to 27°C or 28°C – said Lear.

Sunny and Dry Conditions Expected Later in the Week

The heat is expected to peak on Friday, with some areas potentially seeing temperatures soar even higher before a change in weather.

However, low pressure systems are forecast to bring some welcome rain into the weekend, with potential thunderstorms and heavy showers expected in places.

The heat likely to peak on Friday, but then we could potentially see a change as we move into the weekend as low pressure finally could bring some much-welcome rain – Lear added.

Met Office Forecast for Late June

The Met Office forecast for June 19 to 28 indicates that most parts of the UK will experience dry and fine conditions in the first part of the period.

However, a broad split between the northwest and southeast regions is expected to develop later in June. The wettest conditions will likely affect the northwest, with spells of rain that could be heavy in some areas.

It will likely be very warm or perhaps hot at first in the north, temperatures quickly becoming near normal or slightly above. More settled conditions will be seen in the southeast, with generally drier conditions, although some rain will spread from the west or northwest at times – the Met Office said.

Isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms could develop at times, particularly in the southeast, where temperatures are expected to remain above normal, with occasional hot spells.
