Virgin Media is offering its UK broadband customers a major upgrade, providing the latest Wi-Fi Hub 5 router free of charge. This initiative aims to boost connectivity across the country by replacing older routers and ensuring customers benefit from the latest in Wi-Fi technology. The upgrade is set to enhance home internet performance significantly, supporting faster speeds and more stable connections.
For many households, reliable Wi-Fi is a cornerstone of modern living, from work-from-home setups to streaming services and smart devices. As part of its commitment to improving broadband quality, Virgin Media has begun rolling out the Hub 5 router, which promises improved coverage, faster speeds, and greater efficiency, especially in homes with multiple connected devices.
An Upgrade That Future-Proofs Your Connection
According to Virgin Media, the new Hub 5 will be made available to all broadband customers currently using older Hub 3 or Hub 4 devices, regardless of the broadband package they subscribe to. Customers will be contacted directly by the company once they’re eligible for the free upgrade, with the routers shipped to their homes at no extra cost.
The Hub 5 router is a significant leap forward from its predecessors. It boasts Wi-Fi 6 technology, which offers faster speeds and improved performance when multiple devices are in use simultaneously. This is particularly important in today’s tech-heavy households, where smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and other internet-connected devices are common. Wi-Fi 6 improves efficiency with technologies like OFDMA and MU-MIMO, allowing for a more seamless internet experience during high-demand periods.

Another key improvement is the 2.5Gbps Ethernet port, which allows for faster wired connections, particularly beneficial for those using high-speed fibre broadband packages. With seven antennas compared to the older models’ five, the Hub 5 also promises stronger signal stability and enhanced Wi-Fi coverage throughout the home.
Making Connectivity Easier and More Reliable
Virgin Media’s effort to upgrade customers’ routers is part of a broader strategy to improve broadband performance across the UK. As part of the Virgin Media O2 merger, the company has committed to providing customers with the best broadband experience, with a focus on reliability and future-proofing.
The free upgrade initiative follows a general trend in the broadband industry towards enhancing network infrastructure and boosting Wi-Fi speeds. Many competitors, including Sky and Vodafone, have already made similar strides, offering Wi-Fi 6 or even the latest Wi-Fi 7 routers to their customers. However, Virgin Media’s move to roll out this upgrade at no extra charge is notable for making advanced connectivity available to a wider customer base, regardless of their subscription tier.
The rollout is already underway, with thousands of customers expected to receive their new routers before the end of the year. Virgin Media anticipates that the full upgrade process will be completed by 2026. The transition to Wi-Fi 6 will ensure that homes across the UK are better prepared for future innovations in broadband technology.
