In a move that underscores the ongoing transformation in the banking sector, a major UK bank has revealed the closure of six branches this week, part of a broader strategy to shut down 55 locations across the country.

This decision reflects the ongoing shift in banking practices, driven by an increasing reliance on digital banking services. According to Birmingham Mail, this closure wave is part of a larger trend seen across the UK’s high street banking sector, where traditional branches are being replaced by online platforms.

The bank’s actions aim to align with evolving customer preferences while also addressing the operational needs of a modernized financial network.

Digital Banking Surge Prompts Branch Closures

NatWest, attributed the closures to the significant shift towards digital banking. In a statement, NatWest explained:

Our customers are using digital banking more than ever before – over 80% of our active current account holders now use our digital services, and over 97% of retail accounts with us are now opened online.

This growing reliance on digital platforms has led the bank to reevaluate its physical presence on the high street.

Like any business, we strive to meet our customers’ changing needs and expectations, and we’ve been responding to the industry-wide shift towards digital services by investing to broaden what customers can do themselves and to offer them greater personalisation.

We are also significantly investing in refreshing our network – we expect to invest in excess of £20 million in our network across the UK in 2025 to improve customer service, enhance the look and feel of our branches, and reduce the environmental impact of our buildings, as well as continuing to invest in shared solutions like the Post Office and Banking Hubs.

UK Bank’s Commitment to Modernizing the Network

Despite the closures, the bank is committed to enhancing its customer service experience.

The investment of £20 million in 2025 will focus on improving the aesthetics of branches, reducing the environmental impact of its buildings, and increasing the accessibility of digital and personal banking services through partnerships like those with the Post Office and Banking Hubs.

Impact on Local Communities

While the majority of customers have embraced online banking, there remains concern about the closures’ impact on those who rely on face-to-face services.

Sam Richardson, Deputy Editor at Which? Money, remarked that this marks a significant milestone:

This milestone of more than 6,000 bank branch closures in just nine years underscores the seismic shift that has taken place in terms of our banking habits and the character of the British high street.

Richardson also noted that while some customers may hardly notice the closure of their local branch as they seamlessly transition to online banking, for others who are reliant on face-to-face services, the impact can be disastrous.

  • St Annes on Sea (June 24)
  • West Bridgford (June 24)
  • Beverley (June 25)
  • Stafford (June 25)
  • Garstang (June 26)
  • Mansfield (June 26)

These closures are part of the UK bank’s broader strategy to streamline its physical presence while investing in digital capabilities.
