This summer, Trafford will offer free holiday clubs to children and young people, providing healthy meals and engaging activities, all as part of the Government-funded Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme. This initiative is designed to ensure children from low-income families have access to enriching experiences during the school holidays.

As part of Trafford Council’s ongoing efforts to support local children, the HAF programme is set to benefit over 5,000 young people. The scheme specifically targets those receiving benefit-related free school meals, helping to combat food insecurity and promote positive social interaction during the break.

Supporting the Community’s Most Vulnerable Children

According to Cllr Karina Carter, the council’s executive member for children and young people, the HAF programme offers a significant opportunity for children in the borough, particularly those in vulnerable situations.

“The HAF programme is a great scheme and will provide a huge boost to thousands of young people across our borough,” she said.

The programme’s aim is to not only provide nutritious food but also to give young people the chance to take part in activities that will improve their well-being. This includes sports, music, dance, drama, art, cooking, and gardening.

These sessions are designed to help children develop new skills, foster friendships, and enhance their social abilities during the summer break.

More than 25 local schools, voluntary and community organisations, as well as childcare providers, are working with Trafford Council to deliver this initiative. In total, over 4,900 young people benefited from the programme last year, and this summer’s numbers are expected to rise.

A Tailored Approach to Accessibility and Inclusion

The HAF programme is inclusive of both primary and secondary school-aged children, including those with additional needs. This ensures that no child is left behind, and all eligible children can participate, regardless of their background or challenges.

For children in specific circumstances—such as young carers, looked-after children, or those with special educational needs—the programme offers additional support to ensure their inclusion.

As part of Trafford Council’s broader strategy, these services are designed to meet the varying needs of the community, offering tailored provisions that go beyond merely academic support.

“The scheme will allow children to enjoy a range of activities, develop new skills, and socialise with friends during the summer break,” said Cllr Carter.

By offering free access to such a wide array of activities, the programme gives children the tools they need to thrive, whether academically, socially, or personally.

The HAF programme highlights how collaboration across schools, voluntary organisations, and childcare providers can bring about meaningful change. In this way, Trafford Council is making a concerted effort to ensure that every child gets the best possible start in life, even during the summer holidays.
