A product recall involving one of the UK’s most recognisable ethical chocolate brands has prompted a fresh wave of concern over food safety in the confectionery sector.

Tony’s Chocolonely, known for its strong stance on fair trade and sustainability, has issued a recall of two of its chocolate bars after identifying a risk of contamination.

The affected products are sold in major retailers including Sainsbury’s and Tesco, and the recall was triggered by fears that certain batches may contain small stones.

The Food Standards Agency has since issued a formal alert, advising consumers not to consume the products and to return them for a refund or replacement.

Chocolate Maker Acts Over Foreign Object Risk

Two chocolate bars produced by Tony’s Chocolonely have been urgently recalled from UK shelves following concerns they may contain small stones. The recall affects selected batches of the Dark Almond Sea Salt and Everything Bar, both popular products in major supermarket chains including Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

The warning was issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), which urged consumers not to eat the affected products and instead return them to the place of purchase for a refund or replacement.

In a public statement, the FSA confirmed:

“Tony’s Chocolonely is recalling Dark Almond Sea Salt and Everything Bar because they may contain small stones.”

Affected bars are limited to specific lot codes and best before dates printed on the packaging. The company has stated that the affected items include the 180g Dark Almond Sea Salt bars with lot codes 162633, 162614, and 163061, carrying best before dates of 28 February 2026 and 2 April 2026.

Also impacted are the 180g Everything Bars with batch codes 4331, 4332, and 4333, with best before dates of 26, 27 and 28 November 2025 respectively.

Brand Response Focuses on Safety and Transparency

The Dutch confectionery brand Tony’s Chocolonely addressed the recall on its official website, expressing regret and affirming its commitment to consumer safety.

“Even though the chance of any individual product being affected is low, we’ve decided to take this step to ensure the safety and satisfaction of our Choco Fans,” the company stated. It emphasised that only specific batches are impacted, and all other products remain safe for consumption.

According to the company, the recall follows internal checks indicating the possible presence of small stones introduced during the production process. The precise cause is under investigation.

“This recall only affects these specific products – all your other Tony’s choc is safe to consume and not impacted,” the brand noted.

While no injuries or health incidents have been reported so far, the recall reflects an industry-wide emphasis on rapid response and traceability in food production.

Both the FSA and Tony’s Chocolonely have reiterated their request that the affected products should not be eaten under any circumstances.
