Tesco has announced the removal of its in-app payment feature, which allowed customers to pay and collect Clubcard points in one step. The feature, known as Pay in-store (formerly Tesco Pay+), will be phased out by March 7, 2025. This decision follows a shift in consumer payment preferences, with Tesco citing the increasing use of alternative payment methods as the primary reason for the change.

Shoppers who relied on this feature will now need to scan their Clubcard separately before making a payment, adding an extra step to their checkout process.

Why Is Tesco Removing Pay in-Store?

According to a report from Manchester Evening News, Tesco has decided to remove the Pay in-store feature as part of its ongoing efforts to improve customer experience and streamline payment options.

In an email sent to customers, Tesco explained: “To ensure we’re able to keep bringing you the best value and convenience, we’ve taken the difficult decision to remove the Pay in-store feature, formerly known as Tesco Pay+, from the Tesco app.”

Between now and March 7, 2025, the feature will be gradually phased out, and any linked card details will be removed unless they are used for other Tesco services like GetGo, Whoosh, or home delivery.

How Will This Affect Shoppers?

For many Tesco customers, the Pay in-store feature was a convenient way to make quick payments while simultaneously collecting Clubcard points. With this feature being removed, shoppers will now need to scan their Clubcard separately before completing their payment—a small but noticeable change for those who are used to a one-step checkout process.

Tesco has reassured customers that earning Clubcard points will remain simple, stating: “It’s still quick and easy to earn points on your shopping and fuel and enjoy Clubcard Prices offers by tapping your Clubcard in-store, scanning it via the Tesco App, or adding it to your Apple or Google wallet.”

For those who want to keep their checkout experience as smooth as possible, Tesco recommends adding the digital Clubcard to Apple Pay or Google Wallet, which will allow customers to collect points and pay in just two taps—though still not as seamlessly as the original Pay in-store feature.

Tesco has not announced any replacement for Pay in-store, but it continues to evaluate and update its digital services to align with changing consumer payment preferences.
