Millions of UK households are set to receive significant cost of living support beginning in October, as part of a new initiative designed to ease the financial pressure of rising energy bills. The scheme, which is being expanded this winter, will provide eligible households with a reduction in their energy costs.
The Warm Home Discount (WHD) is at the heart of this program, and according to a report from the Birmingham Mail, it will reach more families than ever before. This extended support aims to offer essential relief to those facing increasing costs, especially as winter approaches.
Extended Eligibility: Six Million Households to Benefit
The Warm Home Discount is typically available to low-income households to help with energy bills during the colder months. This year, however, the scheme is being significantly expanded. Around six million households will now be eligible for the discount, which is double the usual number.
This includes not only those who receive Universal Credit but also individuals who claim Housing Benefit and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), making more people eligible than in previous years. These changes come after criticism that the old system was unfairly leaving out many households in need.
Importantly, pensioners on low income who receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit will also continue to benefit from the Warm Home Discount this year, as they have in the past. For many of these households, the £150 discount will provide much-needed support as they face rising living costs.
The Details: When and How Will Payments Be Made?
For those eligible, the £150 discount will be applied directly to energy bills, either as a credit or via a voucher, depending on how households pay. The payments will occur between November 2025 and March 31, 2026, with most customers receiving their discount before January 26, 2026, according to British Gas. As British Gas stated in an update:

If you qualify for the winter 2025/26 payment, you will have your one-off £150 discount applied between November 2025 and March 31, 2026, at the latest, with most customers receiving their WHD before January 26.
This means that for many, the cost of living support will arrive before the end of January, helping to ease the financial burden during the winter months.
A Lifeline for Low-Income Households
The expansion of the Warm Home Discount is an important move in the fight against the rising cost of living. Keir Starmer, speaking during Prime Minister’s Questions, emphasized how this extended support would make a “big difference” to households struggling on low incomes. With energy prices and living costs continuing to rise, this energy bill reduction is a crucial form of support for vulnerable households.
While this one-off £150 discount won’t solve the broader cost of living crisis, it’s a critical measure to help ease the financial strain for millions of households. The move also highlights a shift in government priorities, focusing more on ensuring those who are most in need are not left behind.
For many, the extension of this program will feel like a much-needed lifeline, especially as the cold weather sets in and households face the prospect of higher energy bills. With this new eligibility expansion, the cost of living support will now reach a broader group of people, offering some relief to those who need it the most.
