People receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and other disability benefits in the UK could save up to £1,400 per year by accessing discounts through an online platform.
Purpl, a free service for disabled individuals, offers savings on essential expenses such as groceries, utilities, and transport in partnership with major brands.
The initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on disabled individuals, who, according to Purpl, need an additional £12,120 per year to achieve the same standard of living as non-disabled households.
Discount Scheme Helps Offset Higher Living Costs for Disabled People
Disabled people often face additional living costs due to medical needs, mobility requirements, and specialised equipment. Georgina Colman, founder of Purpl, highlighted the financial strain of living with a disability, citing personal expenses for therapies, assisted technology, and dietary needs.
“These are not luxuries for me,” Colman said. “They help reduce the inflammation and spasticity in my body, which keeps me able to move more and improves my quality of life.”
According to Nimblefins, the average UK household income is £2,700 per month, meaning disabled households can struggle to cover necessary costs. By using Purpl’s full range of discounts, users could potentially save £118 per month, equivalent to £1,411 per year.
Purpl collaborates with well-known retailers and service providers such as Morrisons, Boots, Currys, EE, Sky, EasyJet, and Plusnet. Discounts range from savings on supermarket shopping to reduced rates on broadband and energy bills.
Octopus Energy, for example, offers a £50 energy credit for customers who switch through Purpl, while those with mobility challenges can access £100 off selected mobility scooters from Betty & Bertie.
How PIP Claimants Can Access Savings
To benefit from the scheme, individuals must register on Purpl’s website and provide evidence of their disability status. Accepted documentation includes Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), a Blue Badge, a Disabled Bus Pass, a Disabled Persons Railcard, or an Access Card. Once verified, users can access a range of discount codes tailored to their needs.
Colman expressed hopes of expanding the platform to include more brands, allowing disabled individuals to reduce everyday expenses further. “As we continue to grow, I’m excited to invite more brands to the platform so disabled people can save on the brands they use regularly,” she said.
For eligible individuals, Purpl represents a straightforward way to cut costs on essential purchases, offering financial relief in an increasingly challenging economic climate.
