Pensioners to Get Five Winter Payments Worth £824 From DWP

This winter, millions of pensioners are set to receive a series of financial boosts aimed at easing seasonal pressures. Totalling up to £824, the five separate payments include fuel support and direct discounts on energy bills. Most will arrive automatically without the need for applications, although higher earners will have their Winter Fuel Payment reclaimed through the tax system.

Millions of pensioners in the United Kingdom are set to receive five separate winter payments totalling up to £824 from the Department for Work and Pensions (c), according to recent government announcements. The support includes the reinstated Winter Fuel Payment, the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment in Scotland, the Winter Heating Payment, the long-standing Christmas Bonus, and the Warm Home Discount.

The package aims to help older households manage higher living costs during the colder months, with most payments made automatically and without application. Those with incomes above £35,000 will still receive the Winter Fuel Payment, but the full amount will be recovered via the tax system.

Targeted Winter Fuel Support for England and Wales

The Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2024/25 is worth £200 per eligible household, or £300 if someone is aged 80 or over, according to the DWP. In England and Wales, eligibility has been restricted to pensioner households on Pension Credit or other income-related benefits. This change follows the Labour government’s decision to focus the scheme on lower-income pensioners, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves stating it was “the right decision” to ensure support remains “targeted and fair”.

The payment is non-contributory and will be made automatically, with tax recovery applying to higher-income recipients. Over three-quarters of pensioners in England and Wales are expected to receive it later this winter. In Scotland, the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment replaces the Winter Fuel Payment and offers between £101.70 and £305.10 depending on age, household composition, and certain benefit entitlements. This payment will be made by Social Security Scotland from November 2025, with most recipients not required to apply.

Additional Seasonal Payments Across the UK and Scotland

Three further schemes provide extra financial help during winter. The Winter Heating Payment is available in Scotland to those receiving certain qualifying benefits. Worth £59.75, it is paid automatically between December and February, regardless of weather conditions. Social Security Scotland notifies recipients in advance, and payments appear on bank statements as “WHP”.

The Christmas Bonus, introduced in 1972, remains at £10, despite its real value having significantly diminished over time. Disability charities, including Scope and the Bevan Foundation, have called for the amount to be updated to reflect modern living costs, arguing that the current figure is “a drop in the ocean” for those struggling to cover essentials.

The Warm Home Discount offers £150 off electricity bills for qualifying pensioners and low-income households. Payments are made automatically to eligible customers through participating energy suppliers, usually between October and March, either as account credit or a top-up voucher for prepayment meters.
