State pensioners could receive an additional £79 each week through the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Pension Credit, if they became grandparents before April 2017. This extra financial support can significantly aid those responsible for caring for young family members, especially when combined with other eligible benefits.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to support elderly citizens who might be financially stretched while managing additional caregiving responsibilities. The DWP has urged pensioners to apply for this additional support, which could amount to over £4,000 a year.
Aimed at those who have responsibility for children or young adults under the age of 20, this scheme ensures that pensioners can access help tailored to their caregiving circumstances. The extra £79 weekly payment can help cover living costs, particularly for those raising grandchildren or other young relatives in their later years.
How the Payment Works
According to the DWP, the additional amount depends on the age and circumstances of the child or young person being cared for. The standard payment of £67.42 per week is available for each child or young person under 20 who lives with the pensioner. However, if the child was born before 6 April 2017, the amount increases to £78.10 for the first child.
There are specific criteria for receiving the full amount. For children aged 16 or older, they must be engaged in full-time education or approved training. This includes courses like GCSEs or A-levels, or vocational training such as Foundation Apprenticeships.
For those with disabilities, additional allowances can be claimed—up to £36.54 a week for those receiving disability benefits or £114.12 for children who are blind or receiving the highest care component of DLA or PIP. These provisions help ensure that those with complex care needs are not left behind.
Additional Financial Support
State pensioners may also qualify for further financial help through the Pension Credit’s Savings Credit element. For those who reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016, the Savings Credit offers up to £17.30 per week for single pensioners or £19.36 for couples.
This credit is available even for those who may not qualify for the Guarantee Credit part of the Pension Credit.
In addition to these payments, pensioners can access support for housing costs. This includes fees such as ground rent for leasehold properties, service charges, and tent or site rents. The amount awarded will depend on the specific housing costs faced by the individual.
This scheme is vital in helping pensioners cope with rising living expenses, particularly for those who have taken on the responsibility of raising grandchildren or young relatives.
