Drivers aged 70 and over are being warned they could face difficulties obtaining car insurance, as some companies are imposing age caps—despite no legal maximum age for driving in the UK. As reported by Birmingham Live, insurers are using discretionary limits that may leave older drivers effectively forced off the road, raising concerns about fairness and independence.
No Legal Age Cap – But Insurer Policies Vary
There is no official maximum age for holding a car insurance policy in the UK, and drivers who are medically fit to drive are legally allowed to do so, regardless of age. Connor Campbell, from Independent Advisor Car Insurance, confirmed that:
“Legally, there is no maximum age limit for car insurance as long as you’re still fit and healthy enough to drive. You may have slightly less choice, however.”
While most providers do not impose age caps, a growing number are introducing their own limits, typically between 70 and 80 years old, potentially restricting options for senior drivers.
Insurers and Consumer Experts Weigh In
Comparison site Compare the Market echoed the warning, stating that while most people over 70 can still get insured, some insurers set their own cut-off points. Dial Direct similarly noted that age limits vary by provider, urging drivers to check with their insurer directly to avoid being caught out.
Consumer champion Martin Lewis and his MoneySavingExpert team have also weighed in on the issue, advising elderly drivers to be proactive:
“Not legally, but some insurers will set their own limits on who they will cover. So you may want to check with your insurer on this.”
What Older Drivers Should Do
While it’s not illegal for older drivers to stay on the road, the increasing number of insurance providers setting internal age caps could limit access to affordable and reliable cover. Drivers in their 70s and beyond are encouraged to:
- Shop around for insurers that cater to senior motorists.
- Check policy terms carefully before renewing.
- Use comparison tools to find providers with no upper age limit.
For many older people, driving is vital for maintaining independence and mobility, making the lack of legal protection against insurer-imposed age limits a growing issue.
