Octopus Energy’s Major Update: Service Cutoff in June for Millions of Customers | en.Econostrum.info - United Kingdom

Octopus Energy has issued a warning to millions of its customers, highlighting the upcoming discontinuation of outdated Radio Teleswitch (RTS) meters in June 2025. The energy provider has launched a regional tour in Scotland to ensure that customers with these meters can switch to smart alternatives before the critical deadline.

The initiative aims to prevent disruptions to heating and hot water services, especially in more remote areas.

The phase-out of RTS meters marks a significant change for many, particularly in rural and isolated regions of the UK. Octopus Energy has announced its plans to ensure a smooth transition for affected customers, with engineers set to visit the furthest corners of Scotland.

Regional Tour to Facilitate Meter Upgrades

As part of its drive to replace the outdated meters, Octopus Energy is organizing a dedicated regional tour, dubbed the RTS Regional Tour, to ensure that no customer is left without service.

From April 28 to May 11, engineers will visit remote locations such as Skye, Shetland, and Orkney to assist customers with upgrading to smart meters. The company aims to reach those who may not have access to standard services, providing support to prevent potential disruptions in energy supply.

John Szymik, CEO of Octopus Energy Services, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “Whether you live in a city or on a tiny island, our ‘RTS Regional Tour’ is about showing up for every customer and making sure they’re not left in the cold.”

The regional visits are expected to help minimise confusion and inconvenience for customers, particularly vulnerable groups who might be unaware of the changes.

Benefits of Upgrading to a Smart Meter

Switching to a smart meter offers numerous advantages, including continued access to heating and hot water, which is particularly crucial for customers who rely on electricity for heating solutions such as storage heaters

The transition also enables customers to take advantage of smart tariffs, which can help lower energy costs by offering cheaper energy during off-peak hours.

In addition to providing a more efficient energy management system, Octopus Energy is offering a free Octopus Home Mini to all customers who switch.

This pocket-sized device connects securely to the smart meter and offers real-time insights into energy usage, empowering customers to save on their bills. Customers can also request a traditional in-home display if preferred.

The company has urged affected customers to check for RTS meters by looking for a black box next to their current meter or by logging into their Octopus account.

Octopus Energy’s proactive approach is essential, as Age UK, a charity focused on older people, expressed concerns about the potential for increased energy costs for those who are unaware of the switch.
