Octopus Energy has partnered with leading electric vehicle manufacturer BYD to launch a groundbreaking vehicle-to-grid (V2G) bundle, offering UK drivers a unique opportunity to save significantly on their energy bills while supporting the national grid.
The Power Pack Bundle combines a leased electric vehicle, a bi-directional charger, and free home charging, marking a significant milestone in making electric vehicle ownership more affordable and sustainable. The Power Pack Bundle will be available for under £300 a month and is designed to bring V2G technology into the mainstream.
This innovative solution allows electric vehicles to not only draw power from the grid but also send energy back when demand is high, easing the strain on the national grid and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. For typical drivers, this could result in savings of up to £620 per year on their energy bills compared to standard tariffs.
An All-Inclusive EV Package with Free Charging
Unveiled at Octopus Energy’s Energy Tech Summit, the Power Pack Bundle is the first of its kind in the UK. This new offering includes a leased BYD Dolphin, a fully V2G-ready electric vehicle, alongside a Zaptec Pro bi-directional charger, and access to a smart tariff that provides free home charging.
By integrating V2G technology directly into the vehicles, Octopus Energy has removed the need for costly first-generation charging systems, making the package more affordable and accessible.
V2G transforms EVs into “batteries on wheels,” allowing drivers to charge their vehicles when electricity costs are low and feed power back into the grid during peak periods. This process helps balance energy demand while providing users with free driving.
According to Greg Jackson, Founder of Octopus Energy, this technology is set to revolutionise the energy landscape.
“By using some of the battery’s spare capacity to help balance the grid, we can offer free driving. V2G is going to revolutionise our energy system and help drive costs down,” he said.
A Step Forward in Accessibility and Sustainability
The collaboration with Motability Operations is also significant, as it makes this innovative V2G technology available to disabled people across the UK.
Andrew Miller, Chief Executive of Motability Operations, praised the new initiative for its potential to make electric driving more affordable and accessible.
“For our customers, this could mean significantly lower energy bills and an even more affordable route into electric driving,” he noted.
The integration of V2G technology into vehicles also offers a sustainable solution for reducing the carbon footprint of transport. The combined effort of Octopus Energy, BYD, and Motability Operations reflects a growing commitment to making renewable energy and sustainable driving options accessible to a wider audience.
