The Motability Scheme, which serves over 815,000 people across the UK, continues to evolve with the latest update for the period of April to June 2025. This life-changing initiative, designed to help people with disabilities, provides an affordable way to lease cars, wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAV), scooters, and powered wheelchairs. As reported by Daily Record, the scheme is open to people receiving higher or enhanced rates of disability benefits, such as PIP (Personal Independence Payment), Adult Disability Payment (ADP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), and several others.

What’s New in the Latest Motability Update?

For those eligible, the Motability Scheme offers a variety of vehicles, ensuring that everyone can find a suitable option that meets their mobility needs. An update on the Motability website stated, “Our price list for April to June 2025 is now live. There are great options to choose from at every price point, so you can find the right fit for your needs.” This is great news for customers, as the scheme has over 800 vehicles available to choose from, offering something for every preference and budget.

Motability also reassures customers, saying, “We’re here to help you find a mobility solution that works for you. We update our line-up every three months to make sure you always have access to the best possible choice – whatever changes are happening in the car market.” This commitment ensures that participants have the latest and best available options to meet their mobility needs, no matter how the car market changes.

Rising Costs and Availability Challenges

Like many sectors, the Motability Scheme is not immune to the rising costs of car production. The scheme has been open about these changes, noting that “the cost of building and running a car has gone up, including things like insurance, repairs, tyres and parts.” This increase in overall costs has impacted the price of leasing, especially for petrol and diesel vehicles.

Motability further explains, “At the same time, petrol and diesel cars are becoming harder to source and more expensive to produce. You might notice higher Advance Payments for petrol and diesel cars. Even so, the Motability Scheme remains cheaper on average than leasing elsewhere.” This is important for users to keep in mind, as they might notice an increase in upfront costs for certain vehicles, particularly petrol and diesel models, as these become more difficult to manufacture.

What’s Included in the Lease Package?

Despite the rising costs, the Motability Scheme continues to offer exceptional value for those who qualify. Each lease package includes a full range of services, ensuring peace of mind for customers. The package provides comprehensive insurance, servicing, maintenance, windscreen repair or replacement, and tyres through Kwik Fit. Additionally, customers can access full breakdown assistance from the RAC, as well as the flexibility to change up to three drivers during the lease.

The scheme also offers generous mileage allowances, including a 60,000-mileage limit over three years for standard vehicles, or 100,000 miles for Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs). Many adaptations are available at no extra cost, making the scheme even more accessible for individuals with specific mobility needs.

However, it’s important to note that most vehicles require an upfront payment, ranging from £100 to £2,000, depending on the vehicle type. This payment allows for the use of a brand-new car or powered wheelchair for the duration of the lease, along with all the included services and benefits.

How to Apply

If you’re interested in applying for the Motability Scheme or need further details, you can visit the Motability website to explore the wide range of vehicles available. To apply, you’ll need to present your certificate of entitlement, which can be found in your decision award letter from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or Social Security Scotland.

For those in Scotland, there is the Accessible Vehicles and Equipment Scheme, which is essentially the same as the Motability Scheme but with region-specific guidelines. To apply, you must meet the required criteria, including receiving the higher or enhanced rate of the mobility component of the Child Disability Payment (CDP) or Adult Disability Payment (ADP).
