NatWest and the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) have announced plans to close 56 branches across the UK in 2025 as part of a broader shift towards digital banking. The decision reflects evolving customer habits, with more people opting for online and mobile banking services over traditional in-person transactions.

According to Manchester Evening News, the closures will take place gradually, with the majority scheduled between April and June. While NatWest and RBS emphasise that alternative services will be available, the impact on local communities remains a concern.

Reasons Behind the Closures

The banking industry has undergone significant transformation in recent years, driven by technological advancements and changing consumer habits.

According to NatWest, the decision to close these branches reflects a shift in customer preferences towards online and mobile banking.

The bank acknowledges that while digital banking offers convenience, the closures may be disruptive for those who depend on face-to-face services.

A NatWest spokesperson stated :

“As with many industries, most of our customers are shifting to mobile and online banking because it is faster and easier for people to manage their financial lives. We understand that digital solutions are not right for everyone, so we are taking a number of steps to support the people who rely on our branches.”

Alternative Banking Options for Affected Customers

To mitigate the impact of these closures, NatWest and RBS have highlighted several alternative banking options for affected customers. Those who require in-person services can visit nearby branches, as NatWest customers will still have access to RBS locations and vice versa.

In some areas, temporary mobile branches will be set up, allowing customers to carry out limited banking activities such as cash withdrawals, deposits, and bill payments.

Additionally, basic transactions, including cheque deposits and cash withdrawals, will remain available at local Post Office branches.

Wider Banking Sector Trends

The closure of physical branches is part of a broader trend in the banking sector. Since January 2015, over 6,293 bank and building society branches have shut down across the UK, with an average of 53 closures per month, according to data from Which?. The NatWest Group alone has closed 1,431 branches in that period.

Industry experts argue that while digital banking provides greater flexibility and efficiency, it also raises concerns about accessibility for older customers and those in rural communities.

Banking groups have been urged to ensure that alternative services, such as community banking hubs and mobile branches, are available to mitigate the impact of closures.

The closures will affect locations across the country, with 54 NatWest branches and 2 RBS branches shutting their doors. Some of the affected locations include:
