Britain’s largest building society, Nationwide, is preparing to revive its Fairer Share scheme this summer, a program that could see millions of members receive a £100 bonus once again.

The initiative, designed to return value to loyal customers, has previously rewarded more than three million people per year. Although the 2025 edition has not yet been officially confirmed, recent patterns and internal signals point to a likely return.

According to a report by the Birmingham Mail, senior figures within Nationwide have already expressed their intention to continue the scheme, reinforcing speculation that another round of payments is imminent.

Fairer Share Has Delivered Bonuses for Two Consecutive Years

More than three million customers received £100 payments in each of the last two years through the Fairer Share scheme. The initiative, launched to share profits with qualifying members, has become a symbol of Nationwide’s mutual status and focus on member value.

Although criteria for 2025 have yet to be finalized, past eligibility rules offer a strong indication of who might qualify. To be eligible under last year’s scheme, customers had to meet several conditions by March 31 :

  • Hold a current account and use it actively. This includes :
    • paying for things in shops with a debit card
    • having direct debits going out
    • receiving money such as your salary into the account
  • Have a savings or mortgage product with Nationwide
  • Maintain either :
    • at least £100 in savings, or
    • owe at least £100 on a mortgage with Nationwide

These requirements were designed to reward engaged members with diverse financial relationships across the society’s services.

Expected Timeline for 2025 Scheme

An official announcement is expected on May 29, with payments likely to follow in June if the scheme is approved. The society has not guaranteed the scheme will recur every year, clarifying that :

Fairer Share is not set in stone to run annually, but determined each year on Nationwide’s financial position at the time.

Leadership Signals Indicate Likely Return

While the payout is discretionary, statements from Nationwide leadership suggest that it will proceed this year. Senior officials have noted :

It is their ‘intention’ to run the Fairer Share scheme again in 2025.

These remarks, coupled with the scheme’s recent track record, support expectations of its continuation.

The Fairer Share scheme is separate from Nationwide’s £50 ‘Big Thank You’ payments that have been distributed during April. Each program operates under distinct criteria and reflects different aspects of the society’s approach to rewarding loyalty.
