Nationwide Building Society is switching a number of its savings accounts to paperless statements following direct feedback from customers. Those wishing to continue receiving paper statements will now need to opt in manually. The change affects several account types and was first brought to light by customers who received notifications through their banking app or by email.

According to a report by Manchester Evening News, the change applies across a wide range of Nationwide stores and service channels. While the update has been communicated to impacted account holders, the building society has not disclosed the full implementation timeline or specific operational details.

Customer Notifications Reveal Change in Statement Policy

Several customers were first informed of the change through official notifications sent by Nationwide. One customer shared that

They had received a notification from Nationwide stating about the statements for their savings account switching to paperless.

The notice explained that customers who still wanted physical copies by mail would now need to request them.

When asked to explain the changes, Nationwide stated:

Customers can continue to have their savings statements on paper as well as online. However, we have stopped automatically posting paper statements on a number of accounts following customer feedback.

This change is part of a broader effort to streamline communication and align with digital preferences, though paper options remain available.

How to Continue Receiving Paper Statements

Nationwide has confirmed that paper statements can still be obtained, but action is required. Customers can opt in via the mobile app, or make the request either in a branch or by phone.

As the building society clarified:

For those who prefer a paper copy, these can be requested in branch or over the phone, and customers can also opt-in via the app to have their statements posted to them.

The switch applies only to savings accounts and does not impact current accounts or other services.

Full List of Affected Savings Accounts

The following 12 savings products are impacted by the transition to paperless:

  • Branch Easy Access
  • Branch Flex Saver
  • Branch Reward ISA
  • Branch Single Access
  • Branch Smart Instant Child
  • Branch SmartSaver
  • Branch Easy Access ISA
  • Branch Future Saver
  • Branch Reward Saver
  • Branch Single Access ISA

Customers holding any of these accounts will need to update their preferences if they want to keep receiving printed statements.

Nationwide App Adds Dark Mode Toggle

In addition to changes around statements, Nationwide recently enhanced its mobile banking app by introducing a dark mode option. Previously, the app followed the device’s theme settings automatically. Soon, users will be able to control this feature directly within the app.

A spokesperson explained:

Customers will be able to toggle on and off dark mode in the next few weeks. Until then, we would recommend switching between light and dark mode on their mobile phone settings.

This update is part of a larger digital push from the building society, aimed at improving usability and accessibility for all members.
