The weather in the UK is about to experience a significant shift as snow, rain, and sunshine are expected to impact various regions throughout the weekend. From Saturday through Monday, the UK will see a mixture of wintry conditions and milder spells, as colder air moves in before brighter, showery weather follows.

Saturday to Monday: Snow and Windy Conditions

As we head into the weekend, Saturday’s forecast will bring a combination of rain and hill snow, particularly in northern and higher-altitude areas. The Met Office’s forecast from Saturday to Monday says “rain and some hill snow” will move “eastwards” on Saturday. There will otherwise be sunshine “with showers arriving from the west”. While many areas will experience sunshine, some locations will see snow, particularly in the hills, as a result of colder air pushing through the country.

In addition to snow, showers will move in from the west throughout the day. As temperatures remain relatively mild, the showers won’t be severe but will still create a wet and unpredictable environment, especially in the western parts of the UK. The shift in weather will be noticeable, with brighter spells expected, but the potential for rainfall and snow is a key feature of Saturday’s weather.

Sunday: Windy and Rainy Conditions

Sunday is expected to be cloudier and windier, with rain moving into the northwest. According to the BBC forecast, “Sunday will be a cloudy and windy day with rain in the north-west, but it will stay largely dry elsewhere.” The wind will intensify throughout the day, bringing cooler conditions and stronger gusts in the north and west. Areas in the southeast may remain relatively dry and brighter, but the weather in the northwest will be more unsettled.

The rain and wind in the north and west are likely to cause disruptions for travel and outdoor activities. However, the southern and eastern parts of the UK may see breaks in the cloud, allowing for some sunny spells, providing a brief reprieve from the more adverse conditions to the north.

Monday: Mixed Weather with More Showers

By Monday, the UK will see a further mix of weather, with a continuation of the cloud and rain in the north and west. “Monday will be cloudy in the north and west with rain at times. Drier and brighter in the south and east.” Those in the northern regions will experience persistent rain showers, while the south and east will likely see much drier and sunnier conditions. However, even in the dry areas, there will still be some clouds and showers moving through.

This contrast in weather will continue through the day, with many people in the south enjoying bright conditions, while those in the north will have to deal with wet and grey skies. The overall pattern for Monday will be one of unsettled weather, with clear distinctions between the conditions in the north and south of the UK.

Looking Ahead: Dry Spells and More Snow in March

Looking further ahead, there are signs that the first half of March will see a return of high-pressure systems, particularly over the southeast. The Met Office forecast for March 3 to 12 states:

“Much of this period looks like being largely dominated by high pressure, especially towards the south or southeast of the UK.”

This will bring many areas plenty of dry weather, with intermittent sunshine and mild temperatures. The south and southeast will enjoy the best weather, with clearer skies and possibly some fog at night.

However, while much of the UK will experience calm conditions,

“frontal systems are still likely to affect the north and west of the UK at times though, maybe also briefly affecting other parts, bringing some rain and strong winds, and perhaps a little snow to the high ground in the north.”

The forecast also mentions the potential for patchy frost at night, even as temperatures remain near or slightly above normal during the day. This means that, although the south may bask in relatively mild and dry weather, those in the north could continue to face wintry conditions well into the early days of March.

With a mix of snow, sunshine, and rain expected in the coming days, the UK’s weather remains dynamic and unpredictable.
