The UK Met Office has addressed growing concerns over the possibility of an Arctic freeze, offering an alternative forecast for October. Contrary to earlier warnings of 0°C temperatures, the Met Office predicts that the month will be marked by mild and settled conditions across the country.

According to Gloucester Shire Live, the forecast suggests that most regions will experience pleasant daytime temperatures, significantly different from the much-feared cold snap. While some colder nights and frost may be expected, the overall trend points to a more temperate weather pattern, offering a respite from the extreme conditions initially predicted by other meteorologists.

Met Office Forecast: A Warm October Ahead

Contrary to reports suggesting a sudden Arctic chill, the Met Office predicts that the UK will experience mild, settled conditions throughout much of October. Their long-range forecast, extending from Sunday, October 12 to Tuesday, October 21, states that high pressure will dominate the weather, bringing dry and settled conditions to most regions.

Temperatures are expected to be near average or even pleasantly warm during the day, with highs reaching around 18°C in places like Somerset, Greater London, and Aberdeenshire.

On Monday, temperatures in certain areas reached 20°C, while Tuesday’s highs saw 18.6°C at Merryfield (Somerset) and 18.5°C at Heathrow Airport. This warm weather aligns with the Met Office’s predictions of clear skies and sunshine, following Storm Amy. Meteorologist Nick Finnis from NetWeather also explained that high pressure would build more widely from the southwest, bringing even more settled conditions as the week progresses.

The Met Office further mentioned that some chilly nights could occur, with the possibility of isolated frost in areas where skies remain clear. While the days will generally be warm, colder nights are expected, particularly in more rural locations where mist and fog could develop.

Long-Range Outlook and Potential for Change

The Met Office’s long-range forecast provides more details about what to expect in the coming weeks. It states:

High pressure is expected to prevail, leading to plenty of dry, settled weather… Temperatures will most likely be near average or in places pleasantly warm by day, at least at first, but with some chilly nights and chance of isolated frost where skies remain clear.

Looking ahead, meteorologist Nick Finnis from NetWeather noted:

Later in the week, high pressure will start to build more widely from the southwest, with more widespread drier and settled conditions across the UK.

However, the Met Office also acknowledged a potential shift in the weather patterns later in October.

There is, however, a small chance that it could turn colder and more showery from the east through mid-October. A breakdown to something more unsettled will probably develop towards the end of this period (Tuesday October 21) – it stated.

Regarding the period from Wednesday, October 22 to Wednesday, November 5, the Met Office further highlighted that

The final third of October will likely see a transition to more unsettled conditions across the UK, with high pressure slipping away, though the timing and manner of this is low confidence.

The Met Office added that the change could bring rain, strong winds, and unsettled weather.

Whether this takes the form of successive weather systems moving in from the Atlantic or a rather slower-evolving weather pattern remains to be seen, but there is a greater chance of most if not all places seeing spells of rain or showers and possibly strong winds later in the month, continuing into the start of November. Temperatures will probably be close to average overall.

South West Weather Outlook: Mild with Some Fog

The Met Office has also provided a detailed forecast for the South West of the UK. For today, the region will experience cloudy skies, with rain and drizzle sinking south throughout the day.

By the afternoon, clearer weather is expected, with sunny spells becoming more frequent. Temperatures will reach around 18°C, while overnight temperatures are predicted to dip to 7°C, leading to a chilly night.

On Thursday, any remaining fog or mist will clear early in the morning, giving way to an increasingly cloudy day, although some sunny intervals may still occur. The maximum temperature will be around 17°C, with light winds and occasional drizzle.

The outlook for the weekend (Friday to Sunday) suggests that the weather will remain largely settled, with the possibility of cloud and light drizzle in some areas, particularly over hills. Fog may also develop overnight in more rural areas.
