Extra DWP support for pensioners is set to provide a range of financial assistance during the upcoming winter months. As the colder weather brings higher energy costs, many pensioners will rely on these additional measures to help ease financial pressure. According to the Manchester Evening News, pensioners may qualify for several payments, including help with heating bills and other essential expenses.
These payments are designed to support those who may struggle to cover rising costs, especially during the winter season. This guide covers all the key details and eligibility criteria for the extra support available from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Winter Fuel Payments: Automatic Help for Pensioners
One of the most significant forms of financial assistance for pensioners is the Winter Fuel Payment. For the winter of 2025/26, all pensioners born before September 22, 1959, will automatically receive this payment. The amount depends on age:
- £200 for pensioners aged between 66 and 79.
- £300 for those aged 80 or older.
These payments will be issued automatically during November and December, making it a crucial form of financial support as temperatures drop. However, pensioners with an annual income exceeding £35,000 will not be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment. Those who are not eligible will be required to repay the amount via PAYE or Self Assessment, with the deadline for opting out being September 15.

This payment can significantly ease the burden of heating costs during the colder months, offering a bit of relief as energy bills often increase with higher usage in winter.
Warm Home Discount: Up to £150 Off Your Energy Bills
Pensioners may also be eligible for the Warm Home Discount, which provides a £150 discount on electricity bills. The scheme for winter 2025-2026 is set to begin in October, and the money is paid directly to energy suppliers between October and March.
- For credit customers, the £150 will be credited to the electricity account.
- For those with prepayment meters, a voucher will be issued, allowing them to top up their meter.
If your energy provider supplies both gas and electricity, the discount might also apply to your gas bill. It’s important to note that the Warm Home Discount is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so it’s best to check with your energy supplier early on.
DWP Christmas Bonus: A Small but Welcome Boost
Every year, pensioners can look forward to the DWP Christmas Bonus, a one-off, tax-free £10 payment. This bonus is automatically paid to people receiving the State Pension or certain other benefits during the qualifying week in December.
There’s no need to apply for this payment – it will be paid to the same account where you typically receive your regular pension or benefits. The Christmas Bonus is separate from regular payments, so it may arrive on a different day than your usual benefits. While £10 may seem modest, it can provide a small boost during the expensive holiday season.
The Christmas Bonus is available to those who receive benefits such as Disability Living Allowance, Carer’s Allowance, and Pension Credit. Pensioners who receive the State Pension or other qualifying benefits will automatically receive the bonus.
