A major overhaul of Nuneaton’s Leicester Road gyratory system is nearing completione, with a final decision set to be made by late summer or early autumn 2025.
The proposal to replace the existing traffic system with a four-arm roundabout is part of wider plans aimed at improving traffic flow and pedestrian facilities in the area. As public consultation continues, the local community awaits the green light for what would be a significant reshaping of local infrastructure.
The proposed changes are being overseen by Warwickshire County Council, which hopes to ease traffic congestion and enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists. While the public consultation remains open, the council has announced that it expects the planning application to be approved by autumn, with detailed design work to follow shortly thereafter.
Proposed Changes to Leicester Road Gyratory System
The current Leicester Road gyratory system, along with surrounding roads, has long been criticised for its traffic congestion and lack of provisions for pedestrians and cyclists. According to Warwickshire County Council, the new four-arm roundabout will replace the existing system and introduce several key improvements.
These changes will include the creation of toucan crossings on the Leicester Road arm, Vicarage Street, and Regent Street approaches, making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to navigate the area. Additionally, Regent Street will be realigned to improve access to nearby facilities.
The plans also propose removing the existing traffic lights at the junction of Regent Street and Bond Street and replacing them with a small roundabout, designed to better accommodate vehicles travelling to Nuneaton Train Station.
Other adjustments include reconfiguring local roads, with Back Street and Bond Street being transformed into two-way roads, as well as the modification of the Dunelm car park and delivery areas. These changes aim to improve traffic flow and provide better connectivity to the surrounding areas.
The Relocation of Empire Gym
One of the more contentious aspects of the proposed overhaul concerns the relocation of Empire Gym. The gym, which is based in the former Liquid and Envy nightclub on Leicester Road, faces demolition as part of the project.
The Nuneaton and Bedworth Leisure Trust (NBLT), which operates the gym, has expressed concerns over the uncertainty surrounding its new location.
While the county council is in talks with the charity, a final decision on where the gym will be relocated has not yet been reached. This uncertainty has led to some anxiety among gym-goers and staff, who are awaiting clarity on the plans.
The future of the Leicester Road gyratory system continues to be a major concern for Nuneaton residents as the consultation period and decision-making process go on.
All eyes will be on the outcome of the planning process and the ultimate implementation of these ambitious measures, as the final approval is anticipated later this year.
