The UK is preparing for unpredictable weather this week, as the Met Office issues warnings for potential damaging gusts and heavy rainfall. According to the Manchester Evening News, tropical cyclones Humberto and Imelda, which are currently active over the southwest Atlantic, could significantly alter weather patterns across the UK.
Though hurricanes themselves cannot make direct landfall in the UK, their remnants have the potential to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to the country. The Met Office is closely monitoring these developments and has provided updates on the situation, outlining the most likely scenarios for how these storms could affect the UK.
Tropical Cyclones Could Cause Unsettled Weather
The Met Office has warned of unsettled weather across the UK this week, largely driven by the remnants of tropical cyclones Humberto and Imelda. These storms, while not directly hitting the UK, are expected to significantly affect weather patterns. Earlier this week, Chris Bulmer, a meteorologist at the Met Office, explained,
“The situation becomes more complex later in the week as tropical cyclones Humberto and Imelda, currently over the southwest Atlantic, influence our weather, increasing the risk of a deep low developing near the UK.”
He added,
“If this materialises, we could see some very strong winds as well as further heavy rainfall Friday into Saturday, but at this time, the development and track of this system remains uncertain. We’re monitoring this closely.”
The Met Office has issued a three-day yellow weather warning for rain, which will affect parts of Scotland from October 1 (Wednesday) until October 3 (Friday). This warning is only the beginning, as the situation could evolve further, especially depending on the storm’s trajectory and intensity.
The Three Likely Scenarios: What to Expect
As the storm systems develop, the Met Office has laid out three likely scenarios for how the weather might unfold. These scenarios are based on the possible tracks of the low-pressure system that is expected to form from the remnants of Humberto and Imelda:
- Deep Low Crossing Northern Scotland: The most likely scenario is that the low-pressure system will track across northern Scotland, bringing damaging gusts and strong winds to this region. Heavy rain is expected to be concentrated here, and inland gales could affect broader areas in Scotland.
- Low Pressure Moves South: If the low-pressure system shifts further south, it could bring widespread gales across southern Scotland and much of England. In this scenario, damaging gusts and heavy rainfall would affect a larger part of the UK, from the Midlands to the south of England. The Met Office warns that this could lead to disruptive weather across the country.
- Low Pressure Moves Further North: In this scenario, the low-pressure system would remain farther north, keeping the strongest winds offshore. However, gales could still reach northern England and parts of Scotland, with heavy rain expected in the northern and western regions of the UK. This would be the least severe outcome but still brings unsettled weather.
In addition, the Met Office noted that weather fronts will continue to move across the northwest of the UK in the coming days, creating a split in conditions across the country. According to a post shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Met Office wrote:
Unsettled weather is on the way later this week – here’s an overview,
Alongside a video that explains the situation further. The video shows that the jet stream will pick up the low-pressure system, causing it to rapidly deepen and affect weather across the UK later this week and into the weekend.
