HS2 Works to Shut Major Freeway for 19 Days, Causing Major Travel Disruption in Warwickshire

The A46 in Warwickshire has shut in both directions for 19 days as part of HS2 construction works. A reinforced structure is being installed beneath the road, forcing all traffic onto diversion routes. Local communities and commuters are already experiencing significant delays. Drivers are urged to plan ahead as disruption continues into May.

The rollout of the HS2 high-speed rail project continues to reshape transport infrastructure across the UK, with new phases triggering significant changes to existing road networks.

One of the latest developments will see a key section of the A46 in Warwickshire fully closed for more than two weeks, affecting thousands of daily commuters and freight routes through the West Midlands.

Drivers face disruption as key Midlands route closes

Motorists in the West Midlands are expected to face significant delays following the closure of a major stretch of the A46 in Warwickshire, which began on the evening of 11 April. The road will remain shut in both directions until 6am on 1 May to facilitate construction linked to the High Speed 2 (HS2) railway project.

This development forms part of a critical phase in the HS2 infrastructure rollout, with contractors preparing to install a tunnel segment beneath the A46. The temporary closure aims to ensure the safe and efficient placement of a reinforced box structure under the carriageway.

HS2 works to tunnel beneath strategic road corridor

According to National Highways, the closure affects the section between Stivichall Interchange (A45), also known locally as Festival Island, and Thickthorn Island (A452), which connects to Leamington Spa and Kenilworth.

The construction involves HS2 Ltd pushing a pre-formed concrete box structure under the road, allowing the future high-speed rail line to run beneath the A46 without disrupting traffic flow once operational.

A fully signposted diversion route is in place for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), redirecting them via the national motorway network.

Meanwhile, local traffic is being guided along designated alternative routes, with special access arrangements provided for nearby rural communities such as Stoneleigh and Ashow. Drivers are advised not to rely on satellite navigation systems, as these may direct unsuitable vehicles onto inappropriate routes.

Extended traffic restrictions expected beyond initial closure

Although the full closure is scheduled to end on 1 May, the impact on local traffic is expected to extend further. Following the initial works, lane closures will continue on both the northbound and southbound carriageways of the A46, with a 50mph speed restriction in place until 31 July

These ongoing limitations are necessary to support the completion of the box structure installation and associated safety operations.

National Highways has warned drivers to allow extra time for their journeys, citing “lengthy delays” during the full closure of the A46.
