Extra Help for State Pension Claimants: £14K+ in Benefits and Savings Available

A quiet financial boost is waiting for UK state pensioners this June, with benefits and discounts worth over £14,000 available. From housing support to health perks, those on low incomes could claim far more than they realise. But the window to act is narrow, and uptake remains surprisingly low.

Thousands of retirees may be missing out on significant financial assistance, as up to £14,214 in benefits and discounts are available this month. With a combination of state pension uprates and income-related entitlements, eligible pensioners can substantially boost their annual income.

A recent government uplift in state pensions has increased weekly payments for millions of older Britons. At the same time, key benefits such as Pension Credit remain under-claimed, despite unlocking access to a wide range of free services and financial support.

New Pension Rates and the Widening Income Gap

As of April 2025, the UK government introduced a 4.1% increase to both the basic and new State Pension payments.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), men born before 6 April 1951 and women born before 6 April 1953 receiving the basic State Pension now get up to £176.45 weekly — a total of £9,175.40 annually for those eligible for the full rate.

For those qualifying for the new State Pension, the weekly maximum rises to £230.25, equating to £11,973 per year.

Despite this increase, many pensioners still face financial hardship due to limited additional income or savings. The DWP estimates the uplift adds around £360 per year for those on the basic rate and £470 for those on the new State Pension, but this assumes full entitlement — a condition not met by all, particularly those with incomplete National Insurance records.

The discrepancy highlights the importance of supplementary benefits. Pension Credit, in particular, provides essential support to retirees on low incomes and grants access to several other forms of aid, including rent support, energy bill reductions, and health-related exemptions.

Additional Benefits Worth Over £9,900 for Eligible Pensioners

For those who qualify for Pension Credit, a wide range of financial advantages become accessible. The average entitlement from the benefit alone is worth £4,300 annually, according to Royal London. Sarah Pennells, the group’s consumer finance specialist, noted that nearly 30% of eligible pensioners have not checked whether they qualify.

In addition to direct income support, claimants can receive up to £1,000 in Housing Benefit, around £1,600 off Council Tax, and a £150 reduction in heating bills through the Warm Home Discount scheme. Health-related savings include free NHS prescriptions (typically £9.90 per item), dental treatment worth up to £1,000 per year, and up to £215 in eye care support.

Other entitlements feature a free TV licence for those aged 75 and over (£174.50), a £24 Royal Mail redirection discount, and Attendance Allowance of up to £5,740.80 annually for those with severe disabilities. Applications for Pension Credit can be submitted up to four months before reaching State Pension age and backdated for up to three months.
