Eon Next has launched a revolutionary energy tariff in the UK, offering substantial savings of up to £370 for customers. The new “Time of Use” plan adjusts rates based on when energy is consumed, with discounts during off-peak hours. While ideal for those who can adjust their usage, some experts advise caution.

New 12-month tariff offers discounted rates at off-peak hours, potentially saving households up to £370. Energy usage between 2am and 5am will be priced significantly lower under the plan.

Eon Next has introduced a landmark tariff in the UK energy market, targeting cost-conscious consumers looking to lower their electricity bills. The ‘Time of Use’ model adjusts rates based on when electricity is consumed, rewarding those who shift usage to less congested periods.

This new approach arrives amid ongoing volatility in energy prices, as suppliers and regulators explore smarter consumption strategies to ease pressure on the national grid and support environmental goals.

Rates Vary Significantly Depending on Time of Day

Eon Next’s new 12-month fixed-term tariff introduces a tiered pricing structure based on the time electricity is used. According to the supplier, households consuming energy during off-peak periods—specifically between 5am and 4pm and 7pm and 2am—will be charged 20.11p/kWh, notably lower than the current price cap of 27.03p/kWh.

The lowest rate, termed the super off-peak, applies from 2am to 5am, during which the tariff drops to 16.33p/kWh. In contrast, a peak charge of 38.48p/kWh is set for energy used between 4pm and 7pm, when national demand is typically highest.

This model is designed to encourage users to schedule appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines and heating systems outside peak hours. Ramona Vlasiu, chief operating officer at Eon Next, said the tariff aims to give customers “control over their bills” while supporting a more resilient and environmentally sustainable grid.

Not Suitable for All Households, Experts Say

While the model offers potential savings, its practicality depends heavily on household habits and flexibility. A spokesperson for Uswitch, a comparison service, warned: “These tariffs won’t be right for everyone. The super off-peak window is between 2am and 5am — a time when most households are asleep and unlikely to use appliances.”

The spokesperson also highlighted that electric vehicle (EV) owners may not find the new rates competitive compared to dedicated EV charging tariffs, which can offer prices as low as 7p/kWh.

Eon Next’s initiative aligns with national efforts to promote smarter, greener energy consumption. Yet, according to market analysts, its benefits will most likely favour tech-savvy consumers already equipped to automate or shift energy use.

For those unable or unwilling to adjust routines, traditional fixed-rate deals may remain more appropriate. The cheapest current fixed-rate deal from a major supplier sits at £1,549, nearly £300 below the current price cap, providing a stable alternative for less flexible users.
