Rising energy bills have become a major concern for many UK households, and British Gas is addressing this issue through its Energy Support Fund. The company has reopened this vital program, offering financial assistance to customers in England, Scotland, and Wales. This initiative provides a much-needed lifeline for those struggling to keep up with their energy costs.
Households facing energy debt or those at risk of fuel poverty can apply for up to £2,000 in support. According to Devon Live, the fund is designed to help mitigate the impact of rising prices as the UK enters another challenging winter season.
Up to £2,000 for Eligible British Gas Customers
The British Gas Energy Support Fund is specifically designed to help existing customers who are facing energy debt. Households that have an energy debt of between £50 and £2,000 on a pre-payment meter or £250 to £2,000 on a credit account can receive assistance. However, the amount of aid varies depending on the customer’s situation and the type of payment method they use.
To qualify for the fund, applicants must have received help from a money advice agency in the last six months or used the online budgeting tool offered by British Gas. This additional support is crucial for helping households manage their finances and avoid falling deeper into debt, particularly during the colder months when energy consumption is at its peak.
British Gas CEO Chris O’Shea highlighted the importance of this support, stating,
As winter approaches, we know that rising household bills are a real worry for many people across the UK. We want our customers to know that we’re here to support them. Tackling energy debt and fuel poverty is a priority for us, and we’re making sure help is available when it’s needed most.
Helping Thousands of Households
The Energy Support Fund has already made a significant impact. Nearly 6,000 households benefited from the fund in 2023, helping them manage the rising costs of energy bills. British Gas’ commitment to tackling energy debt and fuel poverty extends beyond financial assistance; the company has also committed £140 million to its energy support package, the largest voluntary energy support package in the UK.

In addition to the Energy Support Fund, British Gas offers the Individuals and Families Fund for those who are not customers. This fund provides up to £1,700 in relief for those struggling with energy debt on prepayment or credit accounts. Whether you are a British Gas customer or not, these resources provide a vital safety net for families dealing with increasing energy costs.
Rising Energy Bills and the Strain on Households
This announcement comes just as energy prices are on the rise. Starting October 1, the Ofgem energy price cap has increased from £1,720 to £1,755 per year for a typical household with dual fuel, paid via direct debit. This increase has caused even more financial strain for families already struggling with high energy bills.
The Ofgem price cap sets limits on what consumers can be charged per unit of gas and electricity, but it does not place a total cap on the amount you will pay. The more energy you consume, the higher your bill will be.
To make matters more challenging, this price cap will be revised again on December 31, potentially leading to further increases in energy costs. For many households, especially those in lower-income brackets, these rising energy costs could push them further into debt and fuel poverty. That’s why the support provided by British Gas is so essential this winter.
