The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) warns that thousands of households across England, Scotland, and Wales risk missing out on a £150 discount on their energy bills under the Warm Home Discount scheme, with the application deadline set for Friday, 28 February.

The scheme provides crucial support for low-income households and pensioners during the winter months, but many eligible individuals may fail to apply in time. The DWP urges those who qualify to check their status and take action before the deadline.

What Is the Warm Home Discount Scheme?

The Warm Home Discount scheme, introduced by the UK government in April 2011, is designed to help low-income households and pensioners manage their winter energy costs. The discount is not automatically granted to all eligible individuals, meaning some must apply through their energy supplier.

Under the scheme, credit customers will see the £150 amount credited to their electricity account, while those using Pay As You Go or prepayment meters will receive a voucher to top up their meter.

Who Is Eligible for the Discount?

According to Devonlive, the eligibility criteria were updated in 2022, meaning some people who previously received the discount may no longer qualify. To be eligible, individuals must have been in one of the qualifying scenarios on 11 August 2024.

Households in England and Wales are assessed based on energy costs and whether they receive certain benefits. Those receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit are generally eligible and are considered part of ‘core group 1’ in England and Wales or the ‘core group’ in Scotland.

The DWP also evaluates energy costs based on the household’s location. While most eligible households will automatically receive the discount, some must apply manually or confirm their details by calling a helpline before 28 February. Those who need to do so will receive a letter from the DWP, specifying whether further action is required.

How to Apply

To apply, individuals must contact their energy supplier directly. The discount is applied to electricity bills, with payments made to the supplier rather than the individual. Those uncertain about their eligibility should check their supplier’s policy and visit the GOV.UK website for detailed guidance.

Participating Energy Suppliers

Several major energy providers participate in the scheme, including British Gas, EDF, E.ON Next, Octopus Energy, OVO Energy, ScottishPower, Shell Energy, Utilita, and Utility Warehouse.

Additionally, other suppliers such as 100Green (formerly Green Energy UK), Affect Energy, Boost, Bulb Energy, Co-op Energy, E (Gas and Electricity), Ecotricity, Fuse Energy, Good Energy, Home Energy, London Power, Outfox the Market, Rebel Energy, Sainsbury’s Energy, Scottish Gas, So Energy, Tomato Energy, TruEnergy, and Utility Warehouse are also involved in the programme.

A full and updated list of participating suppliers is available on GOV.UK.
