Millions of pensioners across the UK are set to receive financial support from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) this winter.

The government will issue Winter Fuel Payments of between £100 and £305 to eligible individuals to help them manage rising energy bills. This payment, which is automatically granted to those who qualify, aims to ease the financial burden during the colder months.

The DWP confirmed that the qualifying period for the 2025/26 Winter Fuel Payment will be from September 15 to September 21, 2025. Pensioners born before September 22, 1959, are eligible to receive a payment.

The amount varies based on the individual’s circumstances, with payments of £200 or £300 available for those aged 66 and older. This financial aid will be automatically issued, so pensioners do not need to apply.

Who Is Eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment?

The Winter Fuel Payment is available to pensioners who are of State Pension age during the qualifying week, which for the winter of 2025/26 will be between September 15 and September 21, 2025.

According to the DWP, those born on or before September 22, 1959, will be eligible. Payments are determined based on age: individuals between 66 and 79 years old are entitled to £200, while those aged 80 and above can receive £300.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to support older citizens facing rising energy costs. For those not on income-related benefits such as Pension Credit, the payment is issued per household, helping ease the financial strain of the winter season.

However, it is also designed to be flexible, as pensioners earning over £35,000 annually can opt out of receiving the payment, with the amount being reclaimed by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) based on the individual’s taxable income.

Fraud Warning for Pensioners

While the Winter Fuel Payment offers significant support, the DWP has warned pensioners to remain vigilant against fraud. Scammers have been targeting the elderly with fraudulent messages about the Winter Fuel Payment, particularly via text, email, and social media.

According to the DWP, any communication requesting payment details or claiming the recipient needs to apply for the Winter Fuel Payment is a scam. The DWP has made it clear that all eligible pensioners will receive their Winter Fuel Payment automatically, without the need for any application or further action.

Anyone receiving unsolicited communications should report them immediately and not engage with the fraudsters.

This warning highlights the importance of safeguarding pensioners against potential scams, as they are particularly vulnerable to such tactics. The DWP’s proactive stance on fraud protection ensures that the Winter Fuel Payment continues to serve its intended purpose of helping those who need it most.
