Millions of motorists across Great Britain are being reminded not to “panic” if they misplace their driving licence. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) says a replacement can be ordered quickly and easily online.

The message forms part of a broader push to encourage drivers to use digital services rather than traditional paper-based processes. According to Devon Daily News, the agency has stressed that losing a licence should not prevent motorists from resolving the issue promptly before heading out on the road.

The reminder is aimed at full and provisional licence holders alike. Drivers are encouraged to check they have all necessary documents before leaving home, but the DVLA is clear that misplacing a card is not cause for alarm.

Online Replacement System and Eligibility Requirements

Drivers who need a new card can apply through the official Gov.uk website. A replacement licence costs £20, with payment accepted by MasterCard, Visa, Electron or Delta debit or credit card. According to the DVLA, both full driving licences and provisional licences can be replaced using the same online system. To qualify for the service, applicants must be residents of Great Britain, as a separate system operates in Northern Ireland. They must also not be disqualified from driving for any reason.

During the application process, motorists are required to provide the addresses at which they have lived over the past three years. If known, they are also asked to supply their driving licence number, National Insurance number and passport number.

If a licence is due to expire within two years, applicants are given the option to update their photograph as part of the replacement process. Drivers may choose to keep their current photo or use their passport image, provided they hold a valid UK passport and grant permission for the DVLA to access it. If a new photograph is required, the agency will provide instructions on how to submit one. Importantly, drivers do not need the old paper counterpart of their licence in order to apply for a replacement.

What to Do if a Licence Is Stolen or Later Recovered

In cases where a driving licence has been stolen, motorists are advised to report the matter to the police before submitting an application for a replacement. This step ensures that the theft is formally recorded.

Once an application has been completed online, the DVLA sends a confirmation email to the applicant. Some motorists may also receive an invitation by email to participate in research, although they are free to opt out.

The agency has also issued guidance for those who subsequently find their original licence after ordering a new one. Drivers in this situation must return the old card to the DVLA, along with an explanation. It should be posted to: DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AB.

The overall message from the DVLA is straightforward. While motorists are encouraged to double-check they have their licence before setting off, misplacing it does not need to disrupt plans for long. The replacement process is designed to be completed in minutes, offering a clear route back to compliance for Britain’s drivers.
