Dunnes Stores, one of Ireland’s leading retail chains, has issued an urgent recall for one of its popular bakery items due to mislabelling that could pose a serious health risk.

The item in question, the Dunnes Stores Luxury Apple Tart, was found to contain undeclared almonds, creating a significant danger for customers with nut allergies. This recall affects products with a batch code of 242 and a best-before date of June 16, 2025.

What happened with the affected product?

The issue arises from a packaging mix-up in which some packs marked as Luxury Apple Tart actually contain the Luxury Pear and Almond Pie, which includes almonds not listed on the packaging.

According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), the presence of almonds in these products makes them unsafe for anyone with an almond allergy or intolerance. The recall was announced following the identification of the mistake, and the public was advised to stop consuming the affected product immediately.

Dunnes Stores has urged customers to return the item for a full refund, regardless of whether they have a receipt. The retailer apologised for the error and assured that no further risks would be posed by the product moving forward.

The FSAI echoed the warning, stressing the importance of adhering to the recall to prevent allergic reactions, which can range from mild symptoms to severe cases such as anaphylaxis.

Almond allergies: A serious health concern

For those with almond allergies, consuming the affected pies could lead to potentially life-threatening symptoms.

According to experts, symptoms of almond allergies can manifest through skin reactions such as hives, swelling, or itching, but can also affect the digestive system or cause breathing difficulties. In severe cases, anaphylaxis, a rapid allergic reaction, could occur, requiring immediate medical attention.

The incident highlights the need for consumers with food allergies to exercise caution when purchasing products that may not clearly state all ingredients. Almond allergies, in particular, are among the most common and can be triggered by even trace amounts.
